Windows 7 RC installed on clean machine, now only boots with install dvd to setup
- The title almost says it all. I clean installed win7 on a freshly formatted and partitioned 30gb hdd and the OS installed fine and I was able to install a wireless adapter and get online and everything was hunky dory (save my radeon graphics card that apparently doesn't have wddm drivers). I restarted the computer with the install dvd in and it booted back up a couple times. Then, I tried restarting *without* the install dvd and thats where things have gone nutty. The computer will now only boot off the dvd and consequently will only allow me to run the setup. I tried the boot repair and that didn't detect any problems. I tried running the memory test from the same menu but that also didn't work because it seems like the boot memory on the hard drive isn't being accessed. I was able to run a memory scan by pressing f8 after booting to the dvd and got the safe mode options and whatnot, but thats all still just booting from the setup.
The only thing I've noticed that looks like it could be the issue is that the harddrive is set up as driver letter "d" as opposed to the normal "c" (no pun intended).
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to actually ask the implied question too...
What might be the problem and how can I fix this issue so that I can run windows 7 normally on this computer?

Regards from the Valley of the Sun. - That seems to be a similar issue... I only have one IDE hard drive hooked up though. That and the IDE DVD drive.
- You will need to reinstall Win 7 RC again. You'll need a boot utility or connect the Win 7 drive as a second drive and delete the partition through drive manager. Then start over.
When the installation process starts you should see the message "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD". Press any key. Then the installation files will unpack to the hard drive. At the first restart, remove the disc from the drive. If you don't, ignore the message the second time. It will boot to the hard drive. Pressing any key a second time will require that it runs from the DVD.
That's why the drive letter is assigned as D. - es81,
It definitely sounds as though you've got some issues with your partition table. You may need to use the Windows 7 install DVD to install the OS anew over your current installation, although you shouldn't have to format the drive in doing so. After that, I'd recommend installing the EasyBCD utility to sort out your boot record.

Hopefully it's that easy but it's a bit worrisome that the trouble I had is so easy to cause and necessitates a full re-install. We'll see if this fixes it... :0 - i did download Easy BCD thinking it might have been a bootable util... i'm guessing that's not the case then... i'll give that a shot too
- so far only one hiccup, i took the dvd out right at the initial post after the first reset after unpacking and I got the message that boot failed and I needed to insert the disk again. I did and it tried to start setup all over again. I just restarted the pc again with the disk in this time and waited for the "boot from cd?" prompt, then removed the disk and didn't press any buttons. It briefly flashed a boot options menu before continuing on to the normal checklist of installation steps... it is currently "completing installation"

- Hmmm...a little strange, but it sounds like it's installing ok. Let me if all goes well. Then on to driver issues ;-)
- ok it finished that checklist and said it was going to restart to complete installation. At this point the disk was out and when it reset, the same boot failure "insert disk" came up. I tried restarting once more without the disk to no avail so I put the disk in without pressing a key and rebooted. This time it showed the Boot from CD option and again I did not press any key. It booted to the install windows screen... :(

Ok, so i'm going to see if i can get into that screen i saw with boot options because i almost think i might have seen two listings of "Windows 7"... - i rebooted with disk in and then when it got to the boot from cd option, i removed the disk and pressed f8 repeatedly and got the advanced boot options.
this time the options are for windows 7 as opposed to windows 7 setup (which i think is progress)
i'm going to try starting windows normally from this menu... - it booted, i got into the normal windows GUI and then tried to restart without the disk again... still a nogo
it showed boot failure, insert disk
i reset again with disk, it got to the Boot from CD option again and I removed the disk without f8-ing and it waited a moment before saying "could not boot from cd, bootmngr missing" but then it proceeded to do what it was supposed to do and has loaded windows normally.
man this is fun... :)
So we still have the reboot issue. I'm going to try and load the wireless card drivers and download that Easy BCD and see what can be done... This is definitely something the development team should have a look at though, this is nuts... - Your drive needs to wiped. Put it in another computer as the second drive and delete the partition using disk management and create a new, basic ntfs partition and mark it active. Or you can download a utility from the drive's manufacturer that will write zero's to the disk(that takes hours) That's less time consuming than editing the boot on a dirty drive.
Also, did you burn the .iso file from Microsoft at a slow speed and verify when complete. A corrupted install disk can cause these headaches.
Can you get a wired connection to the computer for the install?
Search this forum for Radeon drivers to use and have them ready for your install-the ATI graphics cards have given people problems- I guess ATI doesn't play nicely with Microsoft on driver development in the early stages.
I have also seen numerous issues with wireless cards in desktops-some that had no solution.

I NTFS formatted the drive in another pc after deleting all volumes and partitions from it so it was definitely all one solid block and formatted.
I re-installed windows 7.

I've tried repairing it with the command line interface available when it boots from the dvd, I tried installing Easy BCD and using its boot record features but nothing looked odd and even after checking that out I tried deleting and re-creating the boot record in that too to no avail.
I also tried resetting the BIOS to default settings.
I can verify in a Linux OS-in-a-CD distro that that one harddrive is active and contains no other volumes or hidden partitions.
Windows 7 will work fine from the harddrive one it has booted into it but STILL, the ONLY way it will boot to the OS (and it is the ONLY OS) is by having the DVD in the drive when the PC first starts booting and by removing that disk ONLY when the prompt to "boot from cd" comes up.
Just to be clear,
1 IDE hard drive set up on the primary channel as the master
1 CD/DVD drive on secondary master IDE
1 floppy drive
the floppy drive is NOT selected in the boot up sequence in BIOS
I can't imagine what is causing this... - Which make and model computer is this? Which motherboard if it is custom?
Is there an option during the BIOS post to select a one time boot drive for OS installation? (ie.-F12 on Dell)
Check the BIOS documentation and determine if there is a special option needed for OS installation. - If windows will boot normaly with the DVD in the drive but won't with out it then the bios must be set to boot off the wrong drive.

you should be right, yes... but the odd thing is that it only boots to the installed OS if the DVD is in the drive to the point in the boot process where it apparently skipped over the hard drive and is asking for permission to boot from the dvd (although it calls it "Boot from cd"). If I leave the dvd in at that point, it loads windows 7 setup, if i eject the disk at that point, the OS magically finally finds the bootmgr or bcd or whatever and loads just fine.
I played around with the bootrec tool and bcdedit for several hours last night because I'd been doing more research about the issue not specific to windows 7. Doing some of the scans revealed that even though the recovery tools and setup dvd obviously found the installed OS, those tools *don't* find it sometimes... I followed the instructions for the following KB articles with some amount of success...:

Still, even after performing those actions and at one point having some success with the scans showing the OS detected, the boot process still won't function without the dvd.
As far as the BIOS goes, I've set it to not seek for any other boot device and the boot order is hdd0, hdd1 (just in case, there is only 1 ide hdd that is not partitioned)

the only option that comes up during post that i've been able to see/use is the "del" and that brings me into the CMOS setup utility where I've been going into the Advanced BIOS features and also looking around all the other items to see if anything could be throwing it off. It is old enough that I still had a 3.5" floppy drive in there but i've removed the power and cable to it as well as disabled it from being sought or causing boot to stall if not found. - If its a western digital drive one more thing to try,remove the jumper and see if that works.

The jumper was on master mode... not sure why that would have created such an issue but I removed it and it booted up right away... wow...
- That's great! OK. I/we didn't ask if you were dual booting. Cable select and master mode on a second drive in an IDE configuration will cause issues. Yes, the jumper should on be on slave on the primary ide bus. Optical drive on secondary bus. You can connect the floppy again.
Enjoy Win 7 RC! - Well that's just it, i wasn't and am not dual booting and that hard drive was and is the one and only hard drive in the computer. Before that last step of jumper removal i had even disconnected the dvd drive and still had the issue. It was bizarre.
