there is no script engine for file extension .vbs

    Question

  • Please help... I intermittently receive the following message on my laptop 'there is no script engine for file extension ".vbs".   I know nothing about running scripts and I just want this message to stop popping up on my screen. Is there something I can do to stop this from happening?

  • Hi,

First check that you have the File WScript.exe in your System32 Folder :
    c:\WINDOWS\system32\Wscript.exe

If so go to any Folder, Click Tools -> Folder Options
Go to the File Types Tab -> Search for VBS (you can start typing vb and it will find it for you)
Click Change and Select the Wscript.exe File.

If it is allready like that verify it
Click the Advanced Button -> Select Open -> Click Edit
check that this is the String that is in the "Application Used to perform Action:"

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %*"

If all of this is right then try to download this ( Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP )

    Good Luck.
