Clearing SharePoint 2010 Cache

    Question

  • Hi All,

We need to clear the cache in the Sharepoint 2010 servers. We have a medium server farm with 2 web front end servers and 2 application servers and a database server.

Can you please advise in which servers the cache clearing should be done? Is it only in the web front end servers or also in the application servers? Is there any downtime in the Sharepoint applications? The cache clear should be done in which order i.e., simultaneously on both the servers or one by on?

Please advise on this to sort out this issue.

  •  which cache are you talking about? Below are the steps for Config cache and blob cache

Configuration cache  - folllow http://blogs.msdn.com/b/josrod/archive/2007/12/12/clear-the-sharepoint-configuration-cache-for-timer-job-and-psconfig-errors.aspx  (stop timer job on all the servers, clear cache on index server first followed by WFE's and application servers)

Blob cache -http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg277249.aspx- can be performed from any server, powershell command clear cache from  web application.

There is no downtime while performing both the steps but you need to stop timer job when you clear the config cache.

  • Yes on all the servers in the farm . Clear on Index server first ad then all other servers but make sure when owstimer is in stopped state on all the servers when you start doing it and take the backup of the GUIDs just in case.
