Create popup window in sharepoint pages.

    Question

  •  I need to provide some button or icon link and clicking on which I need to show a popup window. In this popup window  I need to show data in a grid kind of format with data coming from SQL. I am looking at something like the 'lookup field' but with data coming from SQL. Once user closes popup window, the data should be available to the the screen from where popup window was called.

    please suggest.

    thanks in advance.

  • Sounds like you will need to develop a custom field type for this. In the field type you can define code to call your pop-up and have it do whatever it needs to do to store the value in a text box (or whatever control is appropriate) on the main form.

Check out this on MSDN for some info on where to get started with this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684919.aspx

  • Hello Brian,

Thanks for reply. MSDN link is quite good. Do you have any samples that does something similar to what I am looking for?

  • I don't have any samples around the custom field part of it in SharePoint (although the MSDN link covers most of that). I wasn't massivly involved with the development of a couple of these we did for a client recently, so I can tell you about as much as that MSDN article can.

I did blog about calling post backs from a pop up window which is something you will possibly want to do with this one. The post is at http://pointstoshare.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!AEC42F315B4528B0!2873.entry
