Error In Designer "SharePoint Designer cannot display the item"

    Question

  • Hi,

Whenever I try to open a list in SharePoint Designer 2010 I get the following error in designer

sharepoint designer cannot display the item
              what you can try

click the refresh button or press F5 to refresh the content of your site

Go back to the previous page

               Most likely issues

The file has been deleted from te site

              The site is encountering problems

This happens on any list.  I am using SharePoint 2010 RC and SharePoing 2010 Designer Beta.  Could this be the problem?  If so is the a SharePoint 2010 Designer RC for download and from where can I get it?

    Thanks

    Arjuna.

  • You need to use the same version of both products.  You get SPD RC in the same place you got SP2010 RC.  Neither was publicly available, so you must have some private channel for getting SP2010 RC.  This same channel is where you would get all of the other Office 2010 RC products, such as SPD2010 RC.  I have lots of issues when trying to use SPD2010 RC on SP2010 Beta, so I assume it's the same with SPD2010 Beta on SP2010 RC.  SPD2010 RTM is now available, and I was able to use SPD2010 RC on SP2010 RTM, but I haven't done the opposite yet.

  • If your question is now whether to use 32 or 64 bit then it depends on what the operating systems is 32 or 64) where you want to install SPD and whether you have any other office products installed as all office products have to be either 32 or 64 bit.

so if you have windows 7 32 bit with no office then install spd 32 bit

win 7 64 bit no office install spd 64 bit

Win 7 64 bit with office 32 bit install spd 32 bit

win 7 64 bit with office 64 bit install spd 64 bit

For the last two you wont be able to install the wrong version - if you already have a 32 bit office installed and try to install 64 bit spd the installer will notify you and prevent the install

  • Actually the problem as Clayton said was that I was using Designer Beta with a RC of SharePoint Server.  When I installed RC of Designer it worked fine.
