Permissions for a Document Library folder in SharePoint

    Question

  • Is there a way to set up permissions so that a user can edit a document and move the document into a Document Library folder, but once the document is in the folder, the user can only read the document.  I find that if the folder permissions provide the user with Read access, the user cannot move the document into the folder.

    I'm using WSS.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Emeadow,

In my opinion, it is impossible to set up a permission, a user can edit a document and move the document into a Document Library folder, but once the document is in the folder, the user can only read the document.

But you can use two document library folders with a workflow to do that. You have edit and move permission on Document Library folder A, you only have read permission on Document Library folder B. When you upload a document into this folder, you can use the Custom Workflow Activities on CodePlex to move items from one list to another for different reasons.

  • I am Not very Sure that what you said can be achived as you want the permisions to upload the documents and then keep the documents read only.
Well you can work on creating Custom Roles with specific permissions by copying an existing nearest role and check. Custom mixed Permissions between Contribute and Read should help you achieving what you are looking for.

    Thanks!
