Publishing Site vs Team Site

    Question

  • What is the difference between a publishing site and a team site? I am in an organization that has many sections under it. Would I want to create a site for the whole organization as a publishing site and then have all the sections have a team site? Are there any benefits of a publishing site over a team site?

  • Hi,

All depend on your needs. Team sites are meant especially for collaboration between a team and had features to allow that. publishing sites are particularly aimed to intranets and and internet facing sites. This has been said, if your needs are not yet clearly determined, you can create a team site try it out then, if needed, you can activate the publishing feature afterwards.

Here is a nice post explaining the publishing features : http://mindsharpblogs.com/penny/archive/2007/09/28/2973.aspx

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

Sharepoint 2007 comes with some out-of-the-box site templates that allows Administrators or Information Workers to readily create sites by choosing one of the available templates that suites their requirement.

The out-of-the-box Site Templates available with Sharepoint 2007 are broadly classified into 4 categories as mentioned below.

    1. Collaboration
    2. Meeting
    3. Enterprise
    4. Publishing

Check this for details about each http://dotnetdreamer.com/2009/05/09/introduction-to-site-templates/

  • The publishing features offer some nice features that I've come to rely on even on sites where there is no "publishing" of web content.  Many of those publishing features though can also be enabled on non-publishing sites.  The enhanced Navigation configuration is one example of a feature that is used frequently.
