How to display list data from subsites

    Question

  • Hi Forum,

I am trying to set up a Sharepoint 2010 Server and miss a feature I know from Sharepoint 2007.

I have set up a new Site Collection with several Subsites. Lets call them: Main, Site 1, Site 2, Site 3 ....

Now I create a Document Library in the Main Site. On the Startpages of the Subsites I would ike to have a preview on the Document Library of the Main Site. So that I have only one Document repository, but different Sites can look at this Doclib with a specific filter.

I found a pretty nice Instruction on what I would like to to do in 2007. you find it here: http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=56f96349-3bb6-4087-94f4-7f95ff4ca81f&ID=101

But i need to do this in 2010 and I am Missing the "connect to another library" Button.

I hope anybody can help me and tell me how I have to do this in 2010?

    Thanks

    Timo

  • Hi Timo,

According to KolbyH’s post in SharePoint Designer 2010 New Shell Tour, the functionality of connecting to another list is removed in SPD 2010 due to some issues of this feature in previous version.

Meanwhile, KolbyH suggested two workarounds in his post. You can give it a try.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Best Regards.

  • I would recommend you to either use Data View Web Part via SPD 2010 or use Content Query Web Part to achieve what you want to do.

Ok, I just saw the link from Todd's blog post and yes that is what I was referring to for DVWP

  • Hi Alpesh,

I already tried to realize this with a DVWP, but my problem is, how to connect a DVWP to a Data Souce, which is on a different Site?

for my example above, it would mean, I would like to set a DVWP from Site 1 to Site 2 or from Site 3 to Main.

Even in SPD I could not find the functionality to create such a connection(see my post above- missing button, check out Picture  or 7). If you know where it is hidden, please tell me.

    Regards

    Timo

  • Hello,

I have similar issue. I have site and lots of subsites. On main site I have Image library and I want to upload image to this library from subsites.

I find someting strange. When I am using http://sitename/subsitename/Pages/default.aspx and do insert form computer, I get librarys from subsite, but when I am using http://siteip/subsite/Pages/default.aspx and do insert from computer, I get librarys from site.

    I am using Sharepoint 2010.

How can I use this with sitename?

  • Hi Tbue,

I would recommend you to use REST Services in SharePoint Designer 2010 as your data source for displaying list data from a sub site to anywhere within the same or different site collection. There is a newly introduced service ListData.svc for getting information from lists using joins as well.

In the browser, to display lists - http://servername/_vti_bin/ListData.svc  (this gives all the lists in that site) and to target a single list - http://servername/_vti_bin/ListData.svc/ListName (this displays all the list data)

Using this URL built a REST Service data source in SharePoint Designer 2010 to display in a data view.

Check out this link on querying lists with ListData.svc
