    Question

  • Hello,

I wonder if I can use SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express for remotely manage an installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Ediction, or is it better to install connectivity components from installation DVD.

I found studio express here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7593

    Thanks

  • Hi eclipse79,

For clearing you question, SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express could manage the instances of SQL Server remotely. But it does not support to managing an installation of SQL Server such as SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.
If you need to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition on another machine. You could install it locally by DVD media or using remote connection software to install it remotely.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

It would be better to Install SQL Server Management Studio from Standard Edition DVD, as there are some features not supported by Management Studio Express.

You can find a list of issues in Management Express Studio Readme: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=62302

You will also be able to manage SQL Server Express instances using SQL Server Management Studio.

You will need to uninstall the Management Studio Express as they cannot run side-by-side.
