64 bit Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 ?

    Question

  • Hi,

I am trying to install "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012" from march 6th http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36843 in the description it is stated the install is for 32 and 64 bit architectures. ( the name of the download implies otherwise )

I am installing it a on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine with 64 bit sql server 2012 Enterprise and Visual Studio 2012. The installation will not start because of a failing rule check. "Same architecture installation"

    ---------------------------
    Rule Check Result
    ---------------------------
    Rule "Same architecture installation" failed.

The CPU architecture of installing feature(s) is different than the instance specified. To continue, add features to this instance with the same architecture.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

Is there a 64 bit installable version missing or is this a bug ?

    Thanks for your help,

    Kees Dijk.

    Hope you can help,

  • should the setup really work on a 64-bit system with a 64-bit SQL Server 2012 installed?

the setup is only 32-bit as Visual Studio 2012 (Shell) is 32-bit only but it tries to install 32-bit version of SP1 for SQL Server 2012 which fails and therefore installation is not possible.

Why is the SP1 included in the setup and why does it not detect it correctly that SP1 is already installed on 64-bit SQL Server

  • from Greg Low:
Make sure you choose the "New Instance" option (strange as that might seem). Otherwise, you'll get an error that says the following:

    Rule "Same architecture installation" failed.

    I've not verified this solution

I've now installed it successfully on 64-bit system by choosing "New Instance" option.

  • Hi,

That completely broke my Visual Studio installation. I am trying to fix it now. But looks like I need to reinstall.

    During installation I got :

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
    ------------------------------

    The following error has occurred:

VS Shell 2012 installation has failed with exit code 1603.

    ------------------------------
    BUTTONS:

    OK
    ------------------------------

The summary in the end said :

    Action required:
Use the following information to resolve the error, and then try the setup process again.

    Feature failure reason:
An error occurred for a dependency of the feature causing the setup process for the feature to fail.

    Error details:
§ Error installing Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2012

    Product Update:
Product Update has successfully applied KB 2674319 <http://support.microsoft.com/?id=2674319> and KB 2793634 <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2793634>. These updates have set the patch level of the Setup operation to 11.1.3128.0.

Visual Studio is now waiting as a black screen and several packages failed to load:

    ---------------------------
    Microsoft Visual Studio
    ---------------------------
    The 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Fragments.Hacks.VsPackage, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Fragments.Hacks, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' package did not load correctly.

The problem may have been caused by a configuration change or by the installation of another extension. You can get more information by running the application together with the /log parameter on the command line, and then examining the file 'C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml'.

Continue to show this error message?
    ---------------------------
    Yes No
    ---------------------------

Other packages that failed as well are :

    • 'MRU Package'
    • 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.PlatformUI.SolutionNavigatorPackage'
    • 'Global Search Package'

So that wasn't really the result I was looking for, nonetheless thanks for the effort !

  • I am having the same issue.  I realized that I was missing VS Shell (Integrated) as well as VS for Applications.  I installed those and it still did not work.

I am on VS 2012 update 1.  Does anyone have an answer to this issue?

  • @Daniel_Steiner yes I had and yes I did.

I remember about some comments about problems when a pre RTM version was installed and upgraded to RTM as not everything seems to be uninstalled/upgraded correctly.

is it possible that you uninstall VS2012 and .NET 4.5 completely from you computer and reinstall it using the RTM resp. Update 1 version ?

  • Not really, it would cost me more time than I have at
the moment and I also don't have an RTM version lying around anymore. <o:p></o:p>

Sorry that I can’t be more helpful. Thanks for your
time and effort. For now I can do my work without the SQL Server data tools and
I am planning on completely reinstalling my system soon. <o:p></o:p>

  • There wasn´t actually an issue, just a misunderstanding in what option you would have to select. I updated my blog entry accordingly:

  • Just perform a "New instance installation" instead of install over an existing instance of Sql Server. It worked for me.
