SQL 2012 on Win 8 Pro

    Question

  • Trying to install SQL Server 2012 on a Windows 8 OS.
Hardware:  Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, plenty of Hard Disk space.

No EVAL versions of either Win 8 Pro or of SQL 2012.  Both are the "the real thing".

I have removed ALL instances of any MSDE.

Here is the error I get:

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
    ------------------------------
    ,
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 196610.

    Error code 0x84B10001.

    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&EvtType=0x77A18E2F%25400x972328DC

    ------------------------------
    BUTTONS:

    OK
    ------------------------------

    Any ideas what's missing?

  • OK.  Done.

How will you get to my Skydrive?  The file you need is in a folder called SQL Server.  How do you get it?

    Thanks!

  • We dont need your login information.

All you have to do is click on share folder on top of the page and then make is public or share a link to view content of the folder.

  • I downloaded an ISO image.

    Here is the name:

    SW_DVD9_NTRL_SQL_Svr_Std_Ent_Dev_BI_2012_English_X17-97315.IMG

Then I burned this to a DVD.  Then I launched the Setup.exe file.  And then I got the setup screen and whether I chose the Setup Prep and try to run the Configuration Prep file or the Install a new SQL install, I get the same error as noted in the first post in this thread.

The error is the same regardless of which setup option I choose or if I do Preparation for install.

    Thanks!

    Richard

  • I'll try that.  But I am not sure why, since the Setup.exe from the DVD works fine.

    But I'll try it.

    Thanks!

  • I did what you suggested:

I copied the entire DVD to the hard disk on the laptop.

Then I launched the Setup.exe and got this (exact same) error:

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
    ------------------------------
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 196610.

    Error code 0x84B10001.

    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&EvtType=0x77A18E2F%25400x972328DC

    ------------------------------
    BUTTONS:

    OK
    ------------------------------

    =================

I first tried the System Configuration Checker and then the New SQL Server Stand-alone installation option.  BOTH resulted in the same error and that is the same error I got when running it from the DVD.

The problem is not there.  The MSDE installs are gone, but there is a SQL 2005 Install.

    Thanks!
    Richard

  • The Setup Log file has changed - I have done many attempts to do the setup the last few days - so I am uploading the NEW log file.  The new file is in the file folder called SQL Server.

    the link is http://sdrv.ms/VJpCRo

    Thanks,
