SQL management studio and report service 2008 and SQL server 2005

    Question

  • I cannot query when using 2008 management studio, while it works with 2005.

    What's the problem?

And, Can I use 2008 report service on 2005 server?

  • You want to use SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services with SQL Server 2005 Database Engine, right? You need two licenses, one for 2005 and one for 2008.

What is the error (if any) SQL Server 2008 Management Studio displays? Can you connect to your instances?

  • Please make sure SQL are connected to required instance ,were you want to run the query.

Give the proper instance name while connecting the server in SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio ).

and Yes for Reporting service you need to both license because you are higher to lower version it applies for any generic versions.

and also check Reporting service need to configure properly.
