Vista: Software always appear as "Assigned"

    Question

  • Hello,

when I deploy software with SCE SP1 to Vista 64-bit machines with the option "Publish package(s) to 'Add/Remove Program(s)'" the software is not only offered in the 'Add/Remove Program(s)' dialog, but is shown as an mandatory update (Windows Update tray icon and shutdown button). It is installed automatically, if you shutdown the client PC. I have not set a deadline for the software. It is independent of the software to deploy and works with XP.

What happens or do I misunderstand publish vs. assigned ?

    Greetings

  • Hello tfaul,

By design, a software published to "Add/Remove Programs" should not be installed unless the local administrator choose to install it. Did you encounter this issue on a paticular computer or every Windows Vista computer? Did you approve the program to the Windows Vista computer previously? Could you test this problem with other programs and computers? For example, you can deploy a package to a Computer Group which contains both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Please also check the windowsupdate.log (under %windir%) on the problematic agents to see if any error message logged.

    Thanks.

  • Hello Yog Li,

I'm currently evaluating SCE 2007 and therefore only have 2 Vista 64-bit (virtual) machines. The behavior appears on both machines, but NOT on any XP 32-bit (virtual) machine. The software has never been approved before. The windowsupdate.log does'nt show any error messages, so I don't now what is wrong:

By the way, is there a method to delegate a SCE 2007 remote console to second level administrators without giving the administrative rights on the SCE 2007 server ?

    Many thanks

    tfaul

  • Hello tfaul,

Did you also see these softwares when you click "Install a program from the network" on the Windows Vista agent? It seems that softwares are treated as the Check box "Publish package(s) to 'Add/Remove Programs'" was not checked.

It must use a local administrator on the SCE server to run the remote console. This is by design and have no workaround.

    Hope it helps,

  • Hello Yog Li,

Yes, I see these softwares offered in "Install a program from the network" and the checkbox "Publish package(s) to 'Add/Remove Programs'" is definitly checked. Meanwhile I've tested it with Vista 64-bit ENGLISH (before it was an GERMAN installation) and Vista 32-bit ENGLISCH. Always the same. When I wait, the softwares are installed automatically at the time the windows update client reaches it preset installation time. Are I'm the only one making this experience ?

    Best regards

    tfaul

  • Hi!,

Sorry for opening an old thread, but i was searching for a answer to my problem and saw that this thread exactly describe the same problem as i have on my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine. At the moment we are testing our software configurations to see if there are any problems before we are going to migrate to Windows 7.

I have several (between 10-15) programs listed in the software deployment in SystemCenter Essentials 2007 and have for all of the program's the option Add/Remove Program's enabled. As mentioned by Tfual, those program's are not listed in Windows XP as an mandatory update but in Windows 7 the same program's are listed in Add/Remove program's and also in the update client.

My question now is : is it only a problem of SystemCenter Essentials 2007 or have SystemCenter Essentials 2010 the same problems with Windows 7 clients ?, for us is that important to know before we are migrating to the clients to Windows 7.

    Thanks for any help.

    Best regards,
    jeroenvd.
