SC 2012 VMM SP1 - Best Configuration for Highly Available Windows 2012 VM

    Question

  • Hi there!

There are 2 Hyper-V hosts to manage in the environment. What would you recommend as a configuration settings for the Windows 2012 VM with SC 2012 VMM SP1 Management Server and Console which will be clustered for the high availability? So far, I am planning to have the following settings for 2 VMs:

    • HDD:
      Disk C: 30 GB Windows
Disk D: 30 GB SC VMM
    • RAM: 4 GB
    • CPU: 2 virtual CPUs.
    • NICs: 2

Any other suggestions would be highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance for your help and time!

    Jenn

  • To get the 'extra' layer of redundancy in this virtual environment, a good thing would be to guest cluster your VMM servers on Hyper-V.

In addition, you would also like to consider the SQL server in a similar environment, to get HA on the data layer as well.

    To be more specific:

Cluster your Hyper-V hosts with some sort of shared storage (you don't need a SAN for this, use SMB3.0 which is an entirely new story in Windows Server 2012)

Cluster your virtual machines that's hosting the VMM server role.

    Cluster your SQL server.
