All Virtual Machines - An Error Occurred While Loading the Items

    Question

  • I get the following error when I am trying to see Virtual Machines in SCE 2010. It shows All Virtual Machines (3) in the left Pane, but when I click on that to display the machines in the Right pane I get the error below.

Please note I DID Clear the console cache, I DID reinstall .Net
I have already been able to create a new server AND convert a Vmware to a new server so the correct host is designated.

  • I setup a call with SCE Support, after going through several departments and running various capture processes we ran Debugging Tools for Windows and captured while clicking on the All Virtual Machines. That gave us 13GB of capture logs. I uploaded the capture logs and the support engineer forwarded that to some developers he was working with...

Cause - I have two machines in separate domains with the same Netbios Name - Desktop216

Fix - Renamed one of the machines, restarted the machine, restarted the SCE Console.

Here's the info from the developers -

We found the problem- the customer has two computers that have the same netbios name but are apparently in different domains. SCE is using the NetBIOS name to build a dictionary – the dictionary does not allow for duplicate names, so it throws the exception when the second computer is hit, thus causing the error you see.

The customer will need to rename one of these computers from ‘DESKTOP216’

    Hi,

May I know if there were any changes before the issue occurred?

Just for a test, please try removing and re-adding the host server or virtual machines to see how it works:

How to Designate a Host for Virtualization Management in Essentials

How to Connect to a Virtual Machine in Essentials

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

  • The dialogue box shows -" An Error occurred while loading the items - One or more of the differential adapters threw an exception. See the ..."

No changes, This is the first time I have used it so it is after the server being setup and the HyperV server being designated.

I have never been able to click on All Virtual Machines without getting the error message, so I have never seen a Virtual Machine show in the All Virtual Machines window.

I Removed the Host and then Designated the Server again - Same error message

Removed, rebooted and then Designated - Same Error Message

I don't want to delete the virtual machines as I am using them.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your feedback.

At this time, please check the issue with Process Monitor:

    1.    Download Process Monitor:

    Process Monitor v2.96

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645

    2.    Run this tool and start monitoring.

    3.    Reproduce the error.

    4.    Stop monitoring and see if there are any related errors in the log.

Meanwhile, please check the Event Log and see if there are any related errors.

    Thanks.
