Software Inventory Issue ( File Size Exceeded )

    Question

  • Hi All,

    We have SCCM setup as follows:

    SCCM Server: System Centre  2007 running on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2
    Clients: Windows XP with SP2
    SCCM Primary Site: MIXED mode with one child site at remote location
    The Management point, Distribution Point, Server Locator Point, Reporting Point, Software Update Point roles are all defined on this single site server.
    Clients are configuration manager advanced clients.

    We have been trying to collect hardware and software inventory for our XP Professional SP2 systems and have been facing a few issues related to Software Inventory which require your help to be get resolved.

    Software Inventory client agent is enabled and has been configured as follows:

    Inventory Collection Tab:

    i) name=*.exe; path=C:\; subdirectories=yes; exclude encrypted & compressed files;

    ii) name=*.*; path=C:\; subdirectories=yes; exclude encrypted & compressed files;

    Reporting Detail = File Details & Product Details;

    File Collection Tab:

    i) name=*.*; path=C:\; subdirectories=yes; size=1000(KB); exclude encrypted & compressed files;

    1) On the server running SCCM we get below mentioned errors in Computer Management>Event Viewer>Application under SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR category.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: SMS Server
    Event Category: SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR
    Event ID: 3708
    Date:  4/29/2008
    Time:  5:18:58 AM
    User:  N/A
    Computer: PPLKHIHO09
    Description:
    On 04/29/08 05:18:58, component SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR on computer PPLKHIHO09 reported:  SMS Software Inventory Processor failed to process the file D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\inboxes\auth\sinv.box\TSBWCR5R.SIC because it is larger than the defined maximum allowable size of 5000000.

    Solution: Increase the maximum allowable size, which is defined in the registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR\Max File Size (the default is 5 MB), and wait for SMS Software Inventory Processor to retry the operation.

    and this error is normally followed by the error mentioned below:

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: SMS Server
    Event Category: SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR
    Event ID: 3701
    Date:  4/29/2008
    Time:  5:18:58 AM
    User:  N/A
    Computer: PPLKHIHO09
    Description:
    On 04/29/08 05:18:58, component SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR on computer PPLKHIHO09 reported:  SMS Software Inventory Processor failed to process software inventory file "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\inboxes\auth\sinv.box\TSBWCR5R.SIC," and has moved it to "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\inboxes\sinv.box\BADSinv\la91dxnd.SIC."

    Possible cause: The file attempted to update inventory information in the SMS site database that does not already exist, or the file contains invalid syntax.

    Solution: The client inventory needs to be resynchronized, which will be done automatically. Look for the subsequent message 3703, which indicates the resynchronization has begun.

    and after this We don't see any message with 3703 ID.

    We have tried to locate the file in the mentioned folder i-e  D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\inboxes\sinv.box\BADSinv\la91dxnd.SIC, but weren't able to find these moved files there as well.

    My questions are

    i) What maximum allowable SIZE event 3708 is talking about and for which file. I mean 5 MB file is already too large to contain lots of things.

    ii) And secondly, if it does require an increase, where can I increase this and what will be the effect?

    iii) And thirdly, what does the size=1000(KB) in the File Collection Tab of Software Inventory Client Agent and what file is it whose size is being reffered?

    Now, after reading some posts, when I checked my own test client, I see the following in InventoryAgent.log and FileSystemFile.log

    InventoryAgent.log

    It again shows collected file size EXCEEDED. What file size is it pointing to and how and where can the size be increased so as to solve this issue.

    And Lastly, as mentioned in the Inventory documentation,

    In the results pane, right-click the name of the client whose collected files you want to view, point to All Tasks, and then click Start Resource Explorer.

    In the left pane, click Software.

    Click Collected Files. The list of files collected from the client appears in the results pane.

    But when I browse to the mentioned COLLECTED FILES, I don't see any files listed there and that happens for the clients which are shown as reported software inventory data during last scan i-e yesterday in this case.

    To Summarize, my questions are :

    i) What maximum allowable SIZE event 3708 is talking about and for which file. I mean 5 MB file is already too large to contain lots of things.

    ii) And secondly, if it does require an increase, where can I increase this file's size and what will be the effect ?

    iii) And thirdly, what does the size=1000(KB) in the File Collection Tab of Software Inventory Client Agent and what file is it whose size is being reffered ?

    iv) Why the resource explorer software COLLECTED FILES is not showing any file even for the clients who have reported?

    v) Will increasing the file size resolve these issue or is it something else we are missing ?

    vi) Which collected file size INVENTORYAGENT.LOG shows to be EXCEEDED and how can it be FIXED ?

    I hope I have included everything that might be required to help you understand the problem. If not, please do ask. Hoping to get some solution to this problem.

  • First off, do you really have the File Collection tab set to *.*? If so, then you are telling the client to make a copy of every single file on the computer's hard disk (that fits within the configured file size) AND send it over the wire AND store it on the site server's hard disk. That is NOT something you want to do.

    File collection is the process of actually copying a file off the client, and storing it on the site server's hard drive. You very seldom need to do that. Maybe there is some important data file you need captured, but not all. Most people don't use it at all that I know of.

    So that would be why you are exceeding your max file size of 5MB.

    If you do increase the max size, the potential impact is more data over the wire, more data in the database, and reduced performance, as the site server has to process larger files.

    Not sure why you are asking how to change the max size, the status message already told you that, and you pasted it in:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR\Max File Size

    I am not sure what the max size is, my guess is 50MB. I found that out last week for hardware inventory (max file size of the mif is 50MB), so I'd guess the max for software inventory is the same.

  • Thanks Wally,

    Your answer arises two more questions.

    1)  Shoud I remove *.* from the file collection tab ? What woulkd be the impact of this action on Inventory collection ?

    2) Why the resource explorer software COLLECTED FILES is not showing any file even for the clients who have reported ?

  • I would that my response already answered your two questions, but I guess not.

    #1 - YES, remove the rule that says to collect *.* unless you want to not get any inventory and for those files it can, store EVERYTHING collected on the site server's hard drive. File collection is usually only used for very small, very important files on the clients that you want COPIED to the site server's hard drive. Outside that, that tab should be empty.

    #2 - your files are too large, as referenced by the status message that says it very clearly. You should remove the data (being software inventory rules) you really don't need (which likely is most of it), or increase the size of the data files we can process (as designated by the status message).
