WSUS-SCCM - Restart ?

    Question

  • Hello,

I have several machines with no maintenance window. They have downloaded the patches but they are still waiting for a restart "A system restart is required to completre an installation required by Configuration Manager"

Select the date and the time that software updates will be made available to clients:

Date & Time: 5/14/2010 which is in the past we are 5/17/2010

Set a deadline for software updates installation

    5/15/2010 in the past too

Ignore maintenance windows and install immediately at deadline is checked

    Restart settings: nothing is checked

    There is no maintenance window

but still have a pending reboot??? where to check...?

    Thanks,
    Dom

  • I have machines each month that refuse to restart even though the logs say so.  The problem is if you click the restart button on the popup it will tell you that there is a process running and it must complete first.  There is no process running.  Each month it is a different computer so I can't determine the actual problem.  A solution was for me to create a collection of machines pending a restart for patches.  Then on Saturday During our main Maintenance windwo I send down a restart "shutdown.exe" to the machine and force the restart.  I know that it should have already restarted during the Friday night MW so it is safe to assume, for my enviroment, that those machine need a forced restart.

  • I don't see any problem or I don't understand your probem well, if the machine needs to reboot after patch installation, so it's normal.

  • Hi Matthew,

The machine is effectively in the Collection I had "Software Updates Status - Reboot Pending".

I clcik on the pop-up and it restarted so it seems something might have been pending at a time but it did not try again... should the SUP try to restart again on cycle? There is no Maintenance Window on this machine.

I will create following your advice a restart "shutdown.exe" and force the restart for all these machines which might be pending but I will need to be watching closely as I have a Maintenance Window of 3 hours per month ONLY!!! (:

    Thanks,
    Dom

  • "A solution was for me to create a collection of machines pending a restart for patches."

How did you create this collection?  Which field in what table/view did you trigger from?

    Thx.  Jeff Kantner
