An error occurred while starting the task sequence (0x8007000E)

    Question

  • Hi,

I have migrated to SCCM 2012 and everything was working great. This is a question regarding the final version of 2012 that is why I didn't post it in connect. I have been using OSD on 2012 for a few days but now suddenly I get the following error right after the loading bar where it evaluates the task sequence selected and if everything is available.

An error occurred while starting the task sequence (0x8007000E)

The following is important part of the smsts.log:

I don't know how to attach the actual log file so if you need the full log please let me know and I will send it to you.

I have already tried a new task sequence with brand new boot image and so on. This happens on all task sequences with all boot images. I don't know what to try next.

    Thanks,

  • That is interesting. I have also tried a brand new task sequence with only the by default created items in it. The other task sequence was still advertised. Does that matter? I will try to remove all except for a default one. Also now I am having a different problem as well. I am not able to PXE boot anymore. It just gets stuck at Contacting server right before displaying the F12 option. Its sits there forever. I am working on getting a new PXE point setup. I will try to boot with boot media to see what happens when I use a single default task sequence. Is there a way to find out what part of the task sequence or what exact policy makes it so big?

    Thanks,
    Andreas

You have a very big update policy. You have too many updates targeted this machine.

My guess is that many of those updates are not even applicable to the target machine.

  • Error code E (the 8007 is indicative of the source of the error not that actual error that occured) = 14 (decimal) = "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation."

This is usually the result of a lack of RAM on the system but could be caused by other things. I do (think I) remember seeing this before with a VM I had left at 384MB of RAM.

  • That is what I thought initially too however I have tried it on 3 different systems with the same error. (2 of them are physical computers) All three systems have more than 2 GB memory installed and the hard drive is detected correctly and is bigger than 100GB. I have also tried it with a brand new disk to make sure partitions aren't the problem. One of the systems I am trying it with I have successfully imaged about 4 days ago and now it won't work anymore. The only change I think might have something to do with it is that I removed my SCCM 2007 site.

    Thanks,
    Andreas

  • Looking at the log a little closer, it looks like the error is occuring while the TS is uncompressing something or preparing to compress something (not sure which but probably uncompressing) This would seem to indicate that whatever it downloaded is corrupt.. Can you post more of the log file from before this issue?

  • Based on this, you are just downloading policies which seems to indicate that maybe there is corrupt or bad policy.

The last policy download before the error was <a href="http:///SMS_MP/.SMS_POL?SCOPEID_2D8B4106-1737-48AD-A53F-4B132612B724/AUTHLIST_E5264396-FCD3-4F92-BF80-000F7EBEC172/VI.SHA256:6BEC6C47471318C2079C982D3D5C08E8F549F1526EA7A4B27D36D968CB7F5322">HTTP://<MP>/SMS_MP/.SMS_POL?SCOPEID_2D8B4106-1737-48AD-A53F-4B132612B724/AUTHLIST_E5264396-FCD3-4F92-BF80-000F7EBEC172/VI.SHA256:6BEC6C47471318C2079C982D3D5C08E8F549F1526EA7A4B27D36D968CB7F5322. If you put this URL into IE on a client or the server you should see which policy is the culprit and that may help.

  • The policy that is being downloaded is too big. The TS environment has a limit of 10MB, and policies are stored in the TS environment. If you have very big policies or too many policies, you will get this error.

Can you please tell us a little bit more about your task sequence?

  • That is interesting. I have also tried a brand new task sequence with only the by default created items in it. The other task sequence was still advertised. Does that matter? I will try to remove all except for a default one. Also now I am having a different problem as well. I am not able to PXE boot anymore. It just gets stuck at Contacting server right before displaying the F12 option. Its sits there forever. I am working on getting a new PXE point setup. I will try to boot with boot media to see what happens when I use a single default task sequence. Is there a way to find out what part of the task sequence or what exact policy makes it so big?

    Thanks,
    Andreas

  • The 10MB limit that Kerwin mentioned is per task sequence -- I don't *think* multiple TS Deployments have no impact on this (Kerwin will certainly correct me if I am wrong on this though).

Each task takes up a variable amount of space depending upon what you've configured in it. You could view the raw XML of the task sequence to determine this, but that would be cumbersome at best. In general, its usually the sheer number of tasks in the task sequence that puts it over the limit. However, the limit in 2012 was raised to 10MB from 4MB and so I *think* Kerwin is extremely interested to know how your task sequence is as big as it is. Can you post a screenshot?

As for your PXE issue, what does SMSPXE.log have to say?

You have a very big update policy. You have too many updates targeted this machine.

My guess is that many of those updates are not even applicable to the target machine.

  • You guys are amazing!! The updates I just added in killed it. I removed the install updates task and it works again. For the PXE problem I forgot to recheck the deploy from PXE service point check box on the new boot images. What would be your recommendation for adding updates to the task sequence and how do you make sure it doesn't apply all updates even when re-imaging an existing machine? Or should I just leave it out and run the updates after?

    Thanks,
    Andreas

  • Is this a Win7 or XP deployment?

For Win7, you can use the built-in offline servicing to add applicable updates directly to the image outside of the TS and before the image is ever deployed: http://blogs.technet.com/b/inside_osd/archive/2011/04/18/configuration-manager-2012-offline-servicing-for-operating-system-images.aspx.

For XP, my prefered choice was to manually integrate all of the updates into the XP source files using the /integrate switch available on nearly all post SP3 updates. If you choose to do this, only do OS updates -- IE, Media Player, and other non-OS updates will cause issues.

Also, use a build and capture TS to automatically create your image so that it already includes most/all updates.

Also, not sure of how you are targeting your updates, but maybe review that so you don't have as many.

  • Its Windows 7. I will use the offline servicing. Thanks for all the help!

I got task sequence (0x8007000E), how can i se if my TS i so big, or to many policies?

    - Is there any magic number you should not get over?

  • I got this error, when trying to install a machine with 512mb of ram, in SCCM 2012 SP1. Adding more memory is the solution here.
    Monday, February 25, 2013 2:59 PM
  • I think it is a generic error that can happen also happen if you don't have enough memory. For me it was the amount of updates as my computer had 4GB of memory.

Whow, that´s silly. To diminish the amount of policy, in your case I would suggest:
    - don´t publish All updates to All systems. Devide them by OS and different collections.
    - delete old updates from packages and remove them from software update groups, if your icons do not show green.

  • I am shamelessly bumping this thread, as the issue still exists. Question for all those that are having the issue, did the problem start after you installed MDT 2012 Update 1? Do you have MDT 2012 Update 1 installed?

This is a slight pain... but I am wondering if MDT replaced some files and is the cause of this issue....
