Unable to install SSP 2.0 - cannot find Database instance on local computer

    Question

  • Hello

I am doing my first ever install of VMMSSP 2.0 after SCVMM 2008 R2 but I am unable to get past the "Configure the VMMSSP server and website components to the VMMSSP database screen"

I have a default instance of SQL server MSSQLSERVER on the local machine that SCVMM and VMMSSP is (trying to be) installed on. I am using a domain accouny which is included in local admin group of the box.

I just get the "SQL Server 2008 instance was not found on the specified computer message" regardless of whether I put in the name of the SQL server in lower or upper case. if I put a \ after the servername I get

"Either the specified server name is not valid, or the server is not reachable"

I have opened up all the normal ports in the firewall and SQL protocols are all on apart from VIA. Also browser service is running.

The installer just will not see my local installation of SQL 2008 R2. I have done the WMI thing as per this link and no joy.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-IE/scvmmssp2/thread/b087fdbd-18dd-4bb7-b11b-f663c2894cca

    myetails are as follows

    2008 R2 Ent

    SCVMM 2008 R2

    sql 2008 R2

I am at a loss so any help would be massivly appreciated

    Andy

  • I had this same issue when I was trying to connect to the SQL database but it was not a SQL 2008 R2, it was SQL 2008, found out that the problem was that the user connecting to the SQL Server was not a local administrator of the SQL Server Machine. Once I added him to the administrators group, the installation went ok!

In case someone else has this issue... don't know why it has to be this way, but it is...

  • Hi All:

I got the same issue when using sql 2008 r2 for ssp 2.0, after add  to sql server's local admin group. SSP 2.0 can get sql instances and continue installing.

    Best Regards, Ziv.Shih

  • According to the deployment guide, SQL 2008 R2 is supported now, but I'm having this same issue. Are there any other steps I can try?
