Is it possible to setup Out Of Band management /WOL on a test home network.

    Question

  • I am using this guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc161989.aspx

I am having trouble understanding the certificates process, do I have to register with a domain service to get a certificate in order to use this feature?

  • Yes you can setup OOB in your home lab, I also encourage you to blog your finding too as not many people work with OOB.

I assume that you don’t want to purchase a certificate for this. First you will need to setup a certificate server within your domain. The best part is this also allow you to test Native mode. Then follow the instruction step by step instruction on this page to setup the OOB cert.

One tip, set up your certificate server on Windows Enterprise or Datacenter server not standard.

  • It should still work the problem is that you can auto assign certificate to devices or users.
