    Hey Guys

I'm migrating my first customer from BPOS to Office 365.

    I have two issues:

    1. In the migration instructions it doesn't mention how to get Microsoft to start your user and domain migration from BPOS to Office 365. It just says reset your password, log into office 365 portal and update your dns settings.

Well i've reset the passwords, logged into Office 365 and i get an error when trying to access email - user account not found. It says wait 15minutes but 4hrs later nothing. I called Microsoft and they were too busy to take my call and asked for my number to call me back. Nothing yet.

    2. when I add/update the dns records required in the migration documentation the client loses the ability to receive email from BPOS. Seeing as I get the user does not exist error in Office 365 email they lose email all together. Secondly when I add the dns records required the mx records disappear from the internet. I verified this using a "what's my dns" tool for MX records.

These are the records I udpated:

    CNAME - autodiscover.clientsdomain.com - autodiscover.outlook.com

Type Service Protocol Port Weight Priority TTL Name Target
    SRV _sip _tls 443 1 100 1 hr clientsdomain.com sipdir.online.lync.com
    SRV _sipfederationtls _tcp 5061 1 100 1 hr clientsdomain.com sipfed.online.lync.com
    CNAME   -   clientsdomain.com - sipdir.online.lync.com

None of those records look like they should cause MX record issues.

I also kept the following records as they were originally as I didn't think they needed to be changed or removed just yet:

    ms82243755                      300 IN CNAME red003.mail.apac.microsoftonline.com.

    clientsdomain.com. 300 IN MX 10 mail.global.frontbridge.com.

I have now changed the DNS records back to the way they were so that email is coming back into BPOS.

What do you think is going on?

How should I proceed with my BPOS to Office 365 migration?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Kind Regards
    Jimmy

what are the correct mx record? those instructions don't mention what the correct mx record to use is.

Also In "Office 365, in the header, click Admin, Under Management, click Domains. Follow the instructions to add a domain to Office 365.", I am unable to access this section of Office 365.

    Hey Ralf

That's the problem. I'm not sure if I have started the transition. In the transition guide it just says reset your BPOS user passwords and log into the Office 365 portal with your BPOS usernames and passwords. However, does that mean I've started the transition? Do I have to contact Microsoft to start the transition? What do you think?

I have logged into the Office 365 portal with the user that had admin rights in BPOS, but I don't get those options. The only options I see in Office 365 are: inbox, calendar, options.

This makes me think either this user hasn't got admin rights in Office 365 or the transition process isn't started correctly.

(I am used to the Office 365 admin portal because I have setup new Office 365 accounts and configured them, but I have not performed a BPOS migration to Office 365 before.)

Hi, there are several phases before the transition really starts. The first (you are in, I think) is to prepare users while testing the compatibility of their current passwords.

Nothing more! The really transition is if you get an email with the words "your transition date is terminated". The transition is always at an weekend.

Please don't change the mx records before the transition has ended. Please read this information's in the transition center:

    Hey Ralf

How do I tell if Microsoft have started the transition if I haven't asked them to yet?

I would assume that things just can't start on their own. Should I contact Microsoft Transitions to get it started?

the transition plan is completely in the hands of the transition team from Microsoft. You will get the info with the transition date from Microsoft if they are ready to migrate the accounts of your BPOS users. There is no way (or better it is not recommended) to force manually the transition.

Ahh ok, that's going to present a problem. I'm migrating my customer to Office 365 so they can use Sharepoint 365. I guess the only other choice I have is to delete their BPOS account and create an Office 365 account and re-add their domain. However, this is going to cause their emails to stop working for 1-2days perhaps. That's not really the way I want to do it.

How can I ask Microsoft to start the migration now?

Transition Teams says it is highly recommended to wait for the transition date. And in my experience they are right. Deleting a domain in BPOS and add in a new Office 365 account will not work as you might expect. May be you must sometimes wait for a week or so till all the dns records of the BPOS Domain are deleted by Microsoft. It  isnot easy going. So if you can wait for the regulary transition date it would be better.

But you can make your own experience: call the Support http://www.microsoft.com/online/help/en-us/helphowto/76970997-2861-4a0b-94d3-e08f963aba97.htm

ahh that's going to be a big problem. The transition date is scheduled for September 2012. The problem is this client needs Sharepoint 365 up and running ASAP (within 2weeks).

    Hey Ralf

I called Microsoft and a representative is helping me change the migration date. If all goes well we should be up and running in the next week :)

Thanks for your help guys :)

    Jimmy,

Just to set your expectations properly: the transitions between now and July are pretty full.  I would not expect your transition to be next week and want to set your expectations properly.  If SharePoint 2010 is a requirement ASAP, as you have said, I would, actually, recommend migrating yourself if you can deal with the downtime of email (such as over a weekend).

    Hope this helps,

    Dan
