I have an HP dv2911us with Vista 32 bit purchased in Dec. 2008. My hard drive crashed and I installed a new drive and used recovery disks created right after purchasing. Seemed to work OK. Installed all apps. (Office, printers, etc.). Windows update crashes with the error. Tried to download SP2 manually. It crashes with same error soon after installation starts. Tried the Microsoft Fix It utility; same result. Tried other solutions (regsitry clean-up) etc. mentioned in some MS forums. Restored to earliest restore point after recovery disks and tried all solutions again thinking one of the apps. corrupted something. None of the fixes works.
Laptop seems to be working ( I am using it for this question) but do not have any update capability.
Please help!

Please temporarily disable the third party security programs and boot in clean boot to test.
If the issue persists, you may move to the following steps to repair the system:
1. System File Scanner
-----------------------------
1). Turn on your machine
2). Immediately begin tapping the F8 key repeatedly (If you get to the Windows startup screen start over)
3). When the Startup Options menu comes up select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt”
4). At the command prompt type this command sfc /scannow
5). Then press enter
This utility will look for damaged or missing system files and attempt to correct the problem. When it finishes, it will tell you the results (example: SFC found and fixed problems). Restart your system normally. If you boot successfully into Vista, the problem should be solved. Let us know if either of these steps solve the problem.
2. Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1). Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2). Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.
3). Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.
4). Click Repair your computer.
5). In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next.
6). At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on Repair your computer.
7). Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
8). In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
