Archiving configured but no records in SQL database

I am trying to get archiving configures however despite the settings looking correct I don't see any records getting into the sql database.
Both servers are OCS 2007R2 the front end server (ocs-frontend) and archive server (ocs-archive) on same LAN with no firewalls between them. Both servers are actually VMs on the same physical server but I don't think this should matter as the loading is very light, there are only 10 users on this using IM only. Both servers can Ping each other by name and file share etc so I can't see any problems with communications between them.
On the FE server in the Forest Global Properties under the Archiving Tab 'Archive for all users' is set for Internal Communications and also for Federated Communications.
Under the Standard edition servers > 'ocs Frontend' > Archiving Tab I have 'Activate IM Content Archiving' checkbox on and the front-end server is associated with the archive server.
On the Archive server the database name is 'LcsLog" and archiving days are set to 20.
The event log shows "the service established a connection to the back end sql" after restarting the service.
I have run a packet sniff on the archive server and when I send a IM message to another user I see msmq packets between the FE and archive servers which I assume means that the FE server is passing the message to the archive server.
On the archive server I have used the Archiving CDR reporter from the res kit to see if there is any data in the sql database but none shows (I have check that the backend details in the reporter match). I have also used the sql management studio to double check but again I can't see any records.
I have also setup a monitoring server which works OK when using the recorder to view data so I think that if there was anything in the database I should see it.
As far as I can tell the messages are been passed to the archive server correctly but then not added to the database. I can't see any other errors in the logs and both servers have been restarted since install. Any suggestions on where the problem is or what other debugging I can do would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Neil

You should check MSMQ (Microsoft Messaging Queues) on the archiving servers and see if it is correctly processing the queues or there are messages left in the queues.
Please also check event viewer on the archiving server for related errors, another start is this article.
