InfoPath unexpected error for quotes

I have a complicated InfoPath form.
I am working on adding some rules to a few areas and suddenly find myself unable to use quotes.
For example: boolean("True")
Though I have this code in the form already and I even copy/paste the code - I can not longer submit the new rule because InfoPath claims there is a formula error and the quotes have changed to solid blocks (like square bullets).
I worked around the above issue by using string(true()) but now I am trying to use a translate function and can't submit the new rule.
any ideas?

OK, issue identified...
Somehow the font of my quotes was changed... I have no idea how or why.
If I copy/paste a quote from Notepad and overlay the quotes in the formula - it works fine.
If I copy/paste the typed formula from InfoPath into Notepad I get the curly quotes (like the orange quote button on this webpage).
Now to figure out how and why it changed.
