Microphone volume too low
-
17 กรกฎาคม 2552 11:45Just installed the release candidate of Windows 7.
Was previously running Vista.
I use Skype a lot, and my microphone volume level is much lower now than it ever was.
People are telling me they can hardly hear me when I call them.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop- the mic is built-in.
I've looked at all the obvious settings both within Skype and also within Windows, but not managed to fix this yet.
Any suggestions?

chenies33154 ,
Do you have the +20DB boost enabled? if not here's how to enable it: Go to the speaker by the clock(if its not there its hiding in the "^" by the clock) rightclick on it then click on "Recording properties" It'll bring up a dialog then doubble-click on Microphone and it will bring up another dialog then go to the tab called Custom and Check "Microphone +20db Boost" you can also adjust the Microphone's volume in the "Levels' tab and when your done click Apply and Ok. -

Hi thanks for this.
I couldn't access the +20DB boost
right clicked on speaker, no 'recording properties' option, just 'playback devices', 'recording devices', 'sounds' - did you mean recording devices?
If so, then I have 2 microphones in there (for some reason- both seemingly the same). Double-clicking on one brings up a dialog box but there's no 'custom' tab, just general, listen, levels and advanced tabs- and all sorts of options within them -

ehem yes i ment Devices sorry i was a bit tired when i wrote that, hmm it is posable that you may need the actual drivers from dell or soundcard company if they are available to obtain this option or even if your soundcard has this option.hi

I had a similar problem on my Toshiba laptop running windows 7 professional and found a solution similar to this blog.
1. Right click on the speaker icon, select recording devices,2. Check you have the right microphone selected
3. Select the levels tab and move the slider for microphone boost all the way over to the right hand side.
4. Click ok and then make a test call on skype, worked perfectly for me!!! -

hi, id just like to add that i also have a low mic volume (0-1 bars at a loud talking level)
im running win7 x64 and a creative titanium fatality pro soundcard (pci)
the mic boost is missing from this device, but thats a driver issue that creative need to fix.
what id like to point out is that i get the same issue using any number of microphones, including a microsoft lifecam show (usb not mic port), of which microsoft have sent me 3 in an attempt to resolve the issue.
they blamed a fauly batch, unlikley as i recieved these items months apart from the original.
so yes there is no mic boost with x-fi but this is a win7 problem.
im quite happy to keep recieving replacement webcams as i can sell them for a tidy sum (cam costs about 70gbp), but even microsoft doing the usual job of burying there heads in the sand and putting money in my pocket doesnt make up for the inconvenience of not being able to voip with my family and other gamers.
i understand this is an old thread but the issue is still unresolved, and once more im being pushed back to using vista/xp.

This is still an unresolved problem fo a lot of people.
If it is not Win7 (according to Microsoft)
Not sound drivers (according to RealTek in my case)
Could it be Intel Chipset drivers? Is this what links the two?

Hi
If you recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This problem is quite common.(If the default (builtin)microphone is already there)
As Many people firstly suggest, do check the sound recording feature in the "Accessories" folder. To Do That:
Testing microphone over sound recording on Windows 7
Go to "Start" >> and than select "All programs" >> than open up the "Accessories" folder.
Within the folder, you will see the "sound recording" feature. Click on it and a window will pop up.
Press recording button and say or yell something.Once you press the stop recording button,
the recorded sound will be able to save as a .wma format file. So save it on the Desktop.
Lastly do right click on that file and select "open". You probably will not hear anything but it recorded.
You will be redo this that after we make some changes on the sound system soon.
Check the built in microphone within the system
Go to "Start" >> "Control Panel" >> "Hardware and Sound" >> "Sound". The sound window will pop up.
You should see following tabs on top. [Playback] [Recording] [Sounds] [Communications]
Select "Recording" tab.See the default microphone is there with a green ticked.
Go to "Properties"either by clicking "properties button or on the microphone itself.
The "microphone properties" window will be open.Go to "Levels" tab on top.
You will see two adjustment properties. One for "Microphone", another one is "Microphone Boost".
Push both levels to the very right. Set the microphone as 100 and the boost as +40.0
Lastly press "Apply" and than "OK".You have done it.
Now redo the testing that we did at the first stage.
You will be able to hear your voice and the microphone will works on Skype as well as MSN.
Good luck.
