الإجابة Hyper-V networking question

I just purchased a new HP server that has four Network adapters.  Can I hook each one to a different physical network so that certain Virtual Machines have access to the network they need or are they bound to the network that the parent server uses?

    Hello joefuss,

Yes but 1 nic for Management + VM ( means "Allow Management Operating System to share this network adapter")

The others must be not checked.

    You can use also VLAN.

    Sincerely,

    Hi,

Yes, you can leave one physical network adapter for Hyper-V host management, then you can create External Virtual Networks bind to each physical network adapters.
Note: On Hyper-V, the virtual machines can’t access the physical network adapters directly.

Okay so let me ask.  i have two networks... 192.168.54.x and 10.10.1.x.  connect one nic to each of the physical switches for these networks then configure the virtual nics for whichever i need for a particular virtual server?

Which segment is the host machine?

    192.168.54.x or 10.10.1.x?

    Sincerely,

192.168.54.x is my main network.  That is what I would like the primary machine to be.

    Hello Joefuss,

Then your Management + VM Network 1 for 192.168.54.x.

Additional 10.10.1.x VM Network 2 will only be Virtual Switch.

You have to configure your VMNetwork 2 as my first post without check in "Allow Management Operating System to share this network adapter"

First one has to bechecked in "Allow Management Operating System to share this network adapter".

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran

Please excuse if my questions seem amateurish.  So I only need to use two of the four nic then correct?

    Hello Joefuss,

You can ask every question related topic. To be Amateur or expert is not important. We are here for asking and if possible getting solution.

Yes 2 NIC is enough for 2 different VLAN.

    But for an advice.

Disable unused Physical Ethernets for best practice.

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran

Okay two last questions.  I can set virtual machines using either of these networks, correct???  Also on the screenshot below, do I choose both in the virtual network creation screen?

When I click both, it tells me that it recommends keeping one for remote administration.

    Hi,

Dont choose anyone. Later you will configure in HYperv Manager - Virtual Network Manager.

    Hi,

    I assume that the 4 networks are NIC1(IP 192.168.54.x), NIC2(IP 10.10.1.x), NIC3(IP 10.10.2.x) and NIC4(IP 10.10.3.x).

So, you can use NIC1 as management interface for Hyper-V host machine, leave it without External Virtual Network bind.

You can create different External Virtual Networks bind to the rest or the NICs independently. Then if you attach the virtual network adapter of the virtual machine to External Virtual Network bind to NIC2, the virtual machine will get IP address from 10.10.1.x subnet. So do another two NICs.

By the way, it is recommended that you have a read of the following guides for Hyper-V networking. They are very helpful for your further research in Hyper-V field.

    Hello Joefuss,

    Do you have extra networks?

    NIC1(IP 192.168.54.x), NIC2(IP 10.10.1.x), NIC3(IP 10.10.2.x) and NIC4(IP 10.10.3.x)?

    Sincerely,

I think I am going to slow down a minute and read all of those articles.  I did the suggested for the first adapter, the host adapter and all was fine.  When I went to do it for the 10.10.1.x network, I did not check the allow management operating system to share this network adapter, and it wiped out my static settings on the nic attached to that network.

    Hello JoeFuss,

192.168.54.x is my main network. Allow Management checked will create another ethernet adapter and will give all assigned IP to there. And Physical one turns to switch. And the other one become local host ip address.

10.10.1.x must not contain an ip address , Unchecked is not doing anything , it just turns the ethernet to switch.

But you have to be careful for choosing the right ethernet. Because you will see in the details that as physical ethernet address name as below.

    Choose which one is 192.168.54.x.

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran

    Hi,

and it wiped out my static settings on the nic attached to that network.
    >> Before you create an External Virtual Network bind to one physical network adapter, the physical network adapter has all the settings such as IP address. However, after you create an External Virtual Network bind to it, you will be able to find nothing is bound except the Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol, this is an expected behavior.
