Laptop with bitlocker gets errors accessing non-bitlocker usb hdd

Laptop running Server 2008 R2 with a USB hdd that's worked fine for years (it's 150GB) with no issues. Due to policy for the contract I'm working on, I installed and encrypted my laptop hdd using bitlocker.
Now my USB drive is extremely slow to be recognized and when it is it will function for an hour or so but eventually access fails. The drive letter is there but with no directory; or part of the directory will show but no files; or files show but access is slow and eventually locks everything up until I turn the drive off. Eventlog shows thousands of Warnings: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation. Occasionally an Error: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR2. Normally it shows a blue light changing to red when the drive is accessed. When it's acting up it's just blue all the time with maybe a red flash once a minute.
In order to get it back I need to power it down and physically disconnect the USB cable, then connect and power it up. Sometimes it works fine immediately, other times it takes 5 or 10 minutes to figure out it's there. Either way, generally it will fail within the next hour or so. Once in while it will function most of the day with no issues...but rarely. When I leave it up overnight, it never works properly the next day. I have tried rebooting the OS...duh!, removing drivers and letting it reinstalll them (both usb hub and the hdd, etc.).
I can take this drive to other machines and it works fine all week long. The fact that it worked fine before bitlocker leads me to believe it is somehow related...but what? I'm looking for ideas. Not found anything like this via internet search.

Hi,
Have you tried to disable bitlocker? Does this will make the External HDD works fine?
You may follow the below link to turn off bitlocker on the problematic computer, to see if this helps.
Turning Off BitLocker Drive Encryption
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee424315(WS.10).aspx
What is the difference between disabling BitLocker Drive Encryption and decrypting the volume?
In addition, I know you have checked the drive on another computer already. Do they running the same OS? Any error shows up on the test computer?
Please check the following article to diagnostic the errors.
Information about Event ID 51
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244780
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR2.
