    I have a HP Compaq laptop with a Matshita dvd-ram uj-861h ata DVD/CD burner in it. All was working fine, I burned CDs and DVDs using a number of different programs including Roxio and iTunes. I was delighted with it until just recently.

    Nearly 3 weeks ago now I allowed the computer to install a Vista service pack and now Windows cannot load the drivers for the burner any more. I've tried updating them and am told they are fully up to date and working properly, I've even tried a system restore to the previous state before the service pack was installed, that doesn't work either - (which in itself leaves me wondering what the purpose of a system restore is)!?

    The service pack has messed up a laptop that was working perfectly - I'm not impressed!!!!!

    I cannot figure out how to solve this as the driver is correct and up to date, I cannot roll back to the previous state and no one seems to be able to help me. I notice that this is not the first problem with this laptop and burner combination after Windows updates and I have to say I really think it's bad that no one has an answer as it's Microsoft that have obviously created this problem by not testing the service pack sufficiently. I have tried EVERYTHING and I am VERY computer literate so that leaves no obvious solution.

    There is definitely nothing wrong with the drive at all, I've had that checked and the leptop checked for faults. This is an issue caused by the software controlling it. I'm using creator Basic but all other software gives error messages saying no burner faound as well. I've tried removing all the software in case of a conflict and it is STILL Windows that is having the issue loading the driver for the burner.

    Please help as this is causing a serious problems, I need this drive for work!!!!

    Thanks,

    Adam.

    Hi Adam,

    I suggest trying the following methods to troubleshoot the issue.

    Method 1 If you have any third-party CD/DVD-burning software such as Naro or Roxio installed, please temporarily remove them from "Control Panel"-> "Programs and Features".

    Method 2 Delete Filter Drivers

    ======================

    1. Click Start, type regedit and press ENTER.

    2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save.

    Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

    4. Highlight this key ({4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), on the right pane, and then check if Upperfilters and Lowerfilters value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.

    5. Restart the computer.

    Method 3 Reinstall the DVD burner

    ===============================

    1. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

    2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives or Universal Serial Bus controller.

    3. Right-click the DVD burner and click Uninstall. (if your DVD burner is not listed, please skip this step)

    4. Restart the computer.

    What’s the result? If the issue persists, I suggest contacting HP for more information.

    Hope it helps.

    Thank you, Tim. Using your guidance I was able to solve a similar problem. Recently my DVD stopped functioning after a an update to Windows XP.

    I have a HP Compaq nc6400 running Windows XP Professional and a Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-842S.

    Applying Method 2, above, I was able to restore function to the DVD.

    THANK YOU!!

    Tim -

    Many thanks for your workarounds, even though it was so long ago.

    I have a HP Pavilion dv9628nr notebook/laptop and also lost the ability to use the Matshita DVD-RAM drive (UJ-861H) somewhere along the way. I have Vista 32 bit installed and have all updates including SP2. I just used your Method 2 (removing registry values) and it worked!!! Thank you again for taking the time to help and know that your work is so much appreciated!
