Media Player problem

I upgraded to Media Player 11 - and now I cannot play files MP3 or WAV. files. It tells me to "complete the install I must reboot the PC (which I have done 3 times already....and then log on as administrator.
??? I have no clue what to do.
Files do play on a website for me, but not on my desktop. Can anyone help? I am running windows XP.
