windows has recently been displaying this error about my harddrive. is there any way i can fix this cheaply, for i am a student with very little money.

When you start getting messages like that, you had best do a complete backup or image of your hard drive, and look into buying a new one real soon. It may last another 2 months, or 2 minutes, you never can tell. Operating systems and PC's have these messages for a reason, and unfortunately, by the time they display them, the end is usually near.

The disk is old and not repairable. It may stop working and become unreadable at any time. Back up your data immediately.
You might - very unlikely - still be within a warranty period. See http://wdc.com/en/.
The WD800BEVE is a 2.5" IDE drive and there are few IDE drives still available to purchase. Those available are relatively expensive. You should consider carefully whether it is worth while replacing the drive rather than buying a new machine, despite your limited funds.

Great news. WD did honor the warranty and a new drive is on its way to me.
