Unlock application data folder
-
12 Temmuz 2009 Pazar 02:50I need to gain access to the Application Data folder, specifically to replace Adobe CS3 Bridge's keywords file. I have the backup but I can't get into the app folder where the file is stored.
I understand the need for security, etc etc, but there are legit reasons to go there - this is one.
So, how do I do it?
Thanks,
EdB

12 Temmuz 2009 Pazar 03:49The Application Data folder in your user directory is a link to the new AppData folder which is the folder you should be looking for.

12 Temmuz 2009 Pazar 04:47Vistaline, you're right. Unfortunately it's locked, and I cannot gain access, even though I have admin rights. Only thing I can think of is, since I've got the system set up as dual-boot, somehow the old XP partition grabbed hold of the Win7 app data folder. How do I get it back? --Ed

If AppData is locked, RMB > Properties > Security [tab] >Edit... > Add > Advanced... > Find Now > *your user name* > OK until all forms are closed. You should have access to it.
Administrative rights aren't needed to access AppData, in fact, by default the ACLs look like this on my standard user account:
SYSTEM (full)
Administators (full)
Pompadour (full)
Edit:
I wouldn't encourage trying this on the Application Data folder. I've never tried hijacking the links Windows created by default so I don't really know if they continue to function correctly after they've been taken over. That said, I wouldn't see why they would break apart... either way, you've been warned!- Yanıt Olarak İşaretleyen Robinson Zhang 27 Temmuz 2009 Pazartesi 09:08

I have the same problem (Running Win 7: Starter Ed on a Netbook). I managed to change the permissions to show that I have full access, etc. However, when I try to look in the folder, I get an "Access id Denied" error message. Same problem with some other folders.
I have also tried changing the sharing property w/ no effect and have hidden the system folders. The system came setup this way. I have the same issue on another new system running Win 7 Home Ed. This is very frustrating...

28 Haziran 2011 Salı 11:59In my case, the problem seemed to be that "Application Data" pointed nowhere (Right Mouse Button -> Properties shows Target as blank). I renamed the original 'Application Data' as 'Application Data.bad' and created a new link (Drag AppData to the same folder using the Right Mouse Button, and select "Create shortcuts here", then rename the resulting link file). Not sure if I've broken anything, but at least double-clicking Application Data now works... Edit: I'm wondering whether this came about because I used the MS tool to transfer my environment from an older PC.

Vistaline, is somehow correct on your edit, encouraging not to mess with this.
- Although this thread is quite old, this is important in case anyone stops by like I did. If the same or similar information is posted already I do apologize: I did not have time to carefully go through all.
Do NOT change the permissions on the Application Data folder. If you do, then you must reset them. If you give anyone or anything access to this folder you will create the "infinite recursion" problem clearly documented everywhere else. Renaming it might work but why do so if the official solution is to deny access?
So, for everyone: If you changed the permissions to C:\Users\<user>\Application Data then you must add the following entry:
Everyone - List (permission) - Deny.
There are many sources of this around. I paste just one: http://wordlinks.wordpress.com/2010/10/30/solved-appdatalocalapplicaton-dataapplication-data-repeating-recursion/
Best of luck with this.

03 Nisan 2013 Çarşamba 20:50If our lords and masters demand that we keep Application Data locked, then how are we supposed to save a custom Microsoft Word template to a sub-folder there, as is required to apply the template to all Word documents?
