On my test lab, I am running 3 WinSer08 in VMware. 1 DC, 1 for VMM, and 1 MemberServer.

When I run the eval for VMM, I keep getting a error for Domain level low, need to be level 2.  all other settings correct, but only domain level, I removed the server from the domain, but have not check since yesterday.  Any suggestions??

    What's your domain functional level?

Is this VMM 2012? for VMM 2008 the domain functional level needs to be at least Windows Server 2003. Not sure if it's changed for 2012.

If your domain functional level is pre-2003, i'd suggest raising it to 2003 and running the installer again. If it doesn't work try raising it higher (unless you have some requirement to keep it at a specific level).

let us know how it goes.

    Hi,

You can check the following guides.

As luck would have it, it could not change the level, since it was set to the the highest 2008 R2.  So I removed the VMM server from the domain, removed the domain from the DC server, then  I reinstalled the DC on the DC server and then rejoin VMM server, but still got the same error.   I think there may be some remaining settings, showing that it was 2008 R2 level.   I am gonna start from scratch and build two more servers and see if some fresh installed will help.   Thanks for the information, I will keep the forum posted as I will work on this SAT.  I am setting up this lab to study for the 70-659.

Update, I went ahead and deleted both DC and VMM machines and did a fresh install on those two, but I still have the same error.

Basically, I am running these two machines in VMware, this all running on top of Server 2008 R2 (eval)...  Do I need to make the host machine a DC??? does VMM recognize that it is on a VM and requires the host machine to be on a Domain.   I insured that Domain level was 2003 when I created the DC/DNS role on the DC (VM) machine.   At this point, I am at a lost, since I am currently studying for the 70-659 exam.  I am not sure how I will do on the exam, since I am unable to do the exercises.   I have read two books on the 70-659, I decided to prepare a lab enviroment to do the exercises.

My lab set is as follows:

Desktop PC:  Server 2008 R2 (eval), all VM installed with VMware.  3 servers and 2 clients.

Lenovo X200 Notebook: Server 2008 R2 (eval) with Hyper V install, no VMs.

Connected via 5 port switch.   So the one thing that I am thinking is....

    1. The host machine needs to be on a Domain, (i.e. X200)

    2. The host machine needs to a DC.

Any further assistance would be appreciated.

Check out the event viewer logs and the setup log for VMM as you may find useful information about the error and let us know what you find.

I personally installed SCVMM 2012 on my lab network as a VM running on a Windows Server 8 Beta and it worked just fine with my Domain Functional Level = Windows Server 2008 but I uninstalled it because it required too much memory which I do not have.

Okay, I seem to have solved the issue.... I gave the VMM server a domain role, I no longer received the issue of "domain level"  I decided to install SCVMM this morning, but recieved an issue with SQL Server, not sure, but if any one can relate the requirements of SQL for the SCVMM.   I don't have more information as I was working on it while I had breakfast and then left.  I will look at it more tonight.   I appreciate any help.  I think I may have bit off more then I can chew, I signed up the the MS Session on 70-659, since the exam was included, but did not expect it to be way above my level of knowledge... Thanks again.

The issue I was having with the SQL (125), I found the solution on the forum install SQL 2005 from the VMM files and then change the path to SQLEXPRESS.  I have VMM working on my VM machine, I have began to detect the other 5 machine to manage.   One thing I want to add was, after installing SCVMM, since the config analyzer gave me the "domain level" error..I made that server a "domain controller" and I was able to install SCVMM.   Self-Service Portal is not supported in "Domain Controller".   I am following the "Trainsignal" 70-659, the trainer does not mention anything about make the server a "domain Controller" to install SCVMM..   This is something that has bothered me since I completed the installation.  Any comments would be appreciated.
