Windows 2008R2 with SCE 2010 update problem and windows update error 80248015

Good day
I posted this original in the SCE forum but they recommend that I try the WSUS forum
I am having an issue with my Windows 2008R2 RTM server running SCE 2010 which has WSUS as part of it.
I use this server to apply updates to all my clients NOT my servers. When I update my servers I go online via windows update and manually windows update for that. As of today out of the blue I started getting 80248015 and it can't connect to MS Site. I checked my other servers and none of them are having any issues so I know it's just this server. I looked up the error.
So I am not sure what group this would be under Windows Update or SCE because of the following issue
1 check time and date and make sure they are right - I did that and all looked fine
2: Stop the WuAuServ service and rename the distribution group in the windows folder which is a common fix. So I went and stopped the service (Windows Update) and tried to rename the folder as soon as I did that, I get an error saying that the folder is in use. I looked at the service and saw that it was not active so I tried to start the service. Make a long story short it seems that the service is restarting after I shut it down so I can’t change the folder name.
Is this because of SCE? Is there another thing to turn off the service such as a dependency or do I just change it to disabled then turn off service then rename folder then start service and change it back to automatic /delayed?
I don’t want to do anything that may affect the functionality of my SCE (WSUS) to update my clients but I need to be able to update my server can someone please advises. I am affried that if I try to remove the software distribution folder in the windows folder it may also effect the WSUS part of things.
Thanks

Hi,
Since the System Center Essentials and WSUS installed on the same server, I think not only the Windows Update service but also the BITS service need to be stopped.
You could run the following command in the Windows PowerShell to get a basic status of your server before you renamed the software distribution folder.
Get-Service | Where-Object {$_.displayname -like “*Update*” -or $_.displayname -like “background*”} | Format-Table -AutosizeAfter running the command above, you will get the status of these services.
Then you could go into the services.msc to stop the services, after that, you could rename the software distribution folder. Finally, you need to restart the services to verify the issue still remained or not.
Note: You could use the console or Windows PowerShell to stop/restart service. If you are not familiar with the commands in PowerShell, you could run the following command to get help:
Get-Help Stop-Service -Detailed Get-Help Restart-Service -Detailed

James thanks for responding,
I tried typing it out and it failed I decide to copy and paste the command that you sent me and that worked three services are running and as follows (BTW looked at what I wrote and what I copied, it looks the same no idea why it did not work)
Bits - Background Intelligence Transfer Service
WsusServer - Update Server
Wuauserv - Windows Update
If I shut down Bits the following service will stop
Virtual Machine manger agent
My question which was in the original post which I need to ask again is
Will renaming or removing the distribution file folder within the windows folder mess up my WSUS in any way? Are they linked or work together in some way?
From the log that I posted, is this the only way to fix this problem are there any other ideas that I could try without removing or deleted folders?
Thanks

Towards the pure WSUS on Windows Server 2008 R2 is really a common fix. After stoppting the services, you could rename the distribution folder as I expected. I'm not sure why in this situation the service is automatically started when you stopped it. From my side testing, it works properly.
Since the System Center Essentials is installed, I'm not sure whether it make an influence here or not.
A good way to test if the WSUS is working properly is by running the wsusutil checkhealth command via the command line. Wsusutil is located in c:\program files\update services\tools folder. This will create a log in the event viewer if something is not correct on the WSUS with errors/ alerts in the application log.

James
Sorry for the delay. I wanted to follow up with you on this and let you know what happened. I had to shut down the bits services which also stoped the virtual Machine manger agent then I was able to shut down the update service. After that I was able to rename the software folder. I did have to reboot to get the updates working again but it now works. thanks for your help
