Windows Store Apps Won't Launch on Windows 8 Pro with Media Center (x64)

    Question

  • Two days ago, all my Metro apps stopped working with exception to the basic apps like Windows Store, Photos, Video, etc. As far as I can tell, pretty much anything downloaded from the Windows store has ceased working. To make matters worse, attempting to download an app from the Windows Store returns the error "Something went wrong and the Windows Store is no longer working" and suggests refreshing the PC.

While a lovely suggestion that is, the time it would take to restore the desktop apps to their current configuration far exceeds the "worth" of using the metro apps. If there was a way to refresh the PC without losing the desktop apps such as an in-place upgrade from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center I would consider it but some of the responses I read through Microsoft Answers seem to suggest "refreshing" doesn't resolve the issue.

A few things to note, I've run the Metro Apps troubleshooter which says it detects corrupt files but can't fix them yet the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) detects no integrity violations, Clean Boot, Safe Mode With Networking, Safe Mode without networking, and pretty much all the other basic troubleshooting. Nothing on the system has changed, aside from Windows Updates being applied but even removing the applied updates didn't seem to help so I reapplied them.

I noticed in the event log the following messages of notable importance:

Event ID: 5973 / Type: Error / Source: Apps - Activation of app Microsoft.SkypeApp_kzf8qxf38zg5c!App failed with error: The application cannot be started. Try reinstalling the application to fix the problem. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

I've done as you suggested but you and I both know Microsoft Answer's tend to forward the questions that require more in-depth technical help right back here to Technet so I will be really shocked if that's not the case.

I went through an manually checked if permissions were correct as well as to see if for some reason Group Policy was determining them and the permissions for the Registry and file system were both fine as well as Group Policy was not determining them.

I did notice that the linked article discussed Event ID 5961 yet I'm getting Event ID 5960. In my search through all of the Microsoft resources I've seen, nothing seems to come up for Event ID 5960. I don't know if that's important or not but I thought I'd note it just in case.

  • Useful article. Unfortunately, permissions are fine but the SkyDrive and Photos apps still crashing on launch.

Very frustrating and any further suggestions would be much appreciated.
