Using Combat flight simulator WW2 Europe Series wtih Windows 7 Home Premium

    Question

  • I just purchased a Sony VA10 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium.  I have downloaded Combat Flight Simulator WW2 Europe Series and using the keyboard can operate the plane so it seems the disc is compatible with this operating system.
I also purchased a new Cyborg X Joy Stick mfg by Saitek which after contacting their tech support was able to locate the proper drivers for the joy stick and according to tests the joy stick is talking correctly with the computer.

The PROBLEM IS I can not get the joy stick and the game to talk to each other.  All the basics have been done and checked like "enable joy stick", joy stick has been calibrated, settings shows joy stick as "OK" and working correctly...However something the tech support said he had never heard of was each time I would click to do anything associated to the joy stick on the homepage of flight simulator a screen would pop up telling me I had changed my joystick settings from "insert crazy sybol here" to "insert second crazy symbol here" and recommends that I reset so I click "yes" and proceed.

Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,

According to the similar issues occurs on windows vista, the following fix worth a try:

If you have access to an XP computer where the joystick worked, copy the CFS file “COMBATFS.CFG” to a flash drive. In XP find the file using Start>Search>All files and folders… and type in COMBATFS.CFG.

On the VISTA computer with CFS find the needed file using Start>in the Search box type “COMBATFS.CFG”. Once found RIGHT click the file> properties>select Open File Location> rename CombatFS.cfg by placing an “x” in front to temporarily disable it [the file location is likely “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator\CombatFS.CFG”]. Copy the XP “COMBATFS.CFG” file from the flash drive to where it’s CFS location is on the VISTA computer.

Now try running the CFS game, you should find the joystick working. Even if it works ok I think you should copy your Vista COMBATFS.CFG” file “Device=” line and use it to replace the XP file’s “Device=” line (see 4th step in "For those who don’t have access to an XP computer’s COMBATFS.CFG"), then you can delete the renamed (disabled) Vista “xCOMBATFS.CFG” file.

If this did not work then, as Greytop noted, try copying two other CFS files, devices.cfg and devices2.cfg from the XP to the Vista computer. These two files are also located where the COMBATFS.CFG was. Use the same disable/copy/paste method as done with COMBATFS.CFG

  • Excuse me good people, I have the same problem but do NOT have access to another computer as I have upgraded both the desktop and the laptop. Desktop to Windows 7 home edition 64 bit, laptop to Windows 7 home edition 32 bit. CFS WW2 Europe series loads OK and runs but with no joystick operation. I have checked its operation with the operating system and it checks OK, but will not control the game. CFS 2 WW2 Pacific theater works ok on both computers but CSF 3 Battle for Europe does not work on either computer. I have trawlled the net for info and tried to download drivers for the joystick, "Saitek Cyborg 3D Rumble force", but to no avail. Acording to Microsofts compatability site, Combat Flight Sim WW2 Europe series should work with both Win 7 32 and 64 bit op systems. One other quirk with the controller is that the throttle control is reversed, shove away from you= throttle full open. Pull back=throttle closed. In Windows 7 the throttle control is reversed, very odd situation. Any helpfull comment would be gratefully recieved, I think that there are many who are looking for help on the net and would be gratefull for any help. I have looked for help with this problem for over 4 weeks now. Not everyone is clever with computers or the internet.
May I thank you for taking the time to read this post.
    Regards.

  • That is a wonderful suggestion Magon! I bet it works.

Now will you SEND ME A FREE WIN XP COMPUTER WITH THAT FILE ON THE HDD?

Perhaps you could just post directions how to ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM!

  • I have the same problem, but I don't have access to an XP computer; is there any way I can still fix this issue?

  • Hi All,

Copy and paste this into notepad exactly as it is displayed. Rename the TXT file to combatfs.cfg and copy it to your Combat Flight Simulator directory. It will over write your existing version and enable your joystick. If you like you can rename your existing .cfg file in case you're concerned about this not working. Remember that when you go into the settings on your CFS  to set up screen resolutions etc it will give you garbled instructions about a change in your controller. All you do is answer "no" to each request regarding the controller and you'll be fine. I've done this on three vista machines today and they all work perfectly. I'm still trying to resolve the fact that multiplayer hosting or gaming between my vistaachines won't work. More on that later. Thanks to all the other guys on other sites that helped with this fix.

  • The above does not work with Windows 7 Professional. I used administrator privileges, to no avail. Thus, this is still an open item for those of us using Windows 7 Pro. Man, I haven't even tried to see if my older MS ForceFeedback wheel will work with Win7 Pro....argh!

  • Hi All

this trick does work in Windows 7 but be careful in renaming the file.  In the end I edited the existing cfg file as its all too easy to include the .cfg in the file name with the result that it's called combatfs.cfg.cfg which doesn't work!  I also right clicked the program icon and selected 'Run as Administrator.

  • If this is the case you would think MS would get their act together and make a patch??????????

    Sunday, November 28, 2010 11:37 AM
  • NONE of the above works at all and YES, I agree, MS needs to address this issue or refund the money we paid for the game!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am trying to help an older fellow that has a windows 64 bit 7 operating system. I have copied the and done as you suggested but the problem is that the program is not on his hard drive. You have to run the program from the cd that he originally bought. I have even tried copying the files from the cd to the hard drive directory bu to no avail. It still does not work correctly. He is 85 and I would really like top get this to work for him. Can you help me out on this.  Thanks and Merry Christmas.

  • Thank you so much for this fix. It worked beautifully on my new Samsung RF510 with Windows 7 Home Premium. The original COMBATFS.CFG file was located in users\myname\appdata\local\virtualstore\program files (86)\ Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator

Note: you will have to set your folder options to view hidden files and folders to find to find this folder.

Seems like a simple thing for Microsoft to fix, so why don't they?

  • Thank you CFS FAN to share this fix,  it works great, now I can use the joystick Logitech Extreme 3D Pro in Windows 7, there is no doubt that Microsoft makes money selling new O.S. but doesn't care about attending the users problems.

  • I have Windows 7 Home Pro and couldn’t get my Logitech Wingman 3D joystick to work with Combat Flight Simulator 1 either. That is, until I copied CFS Fan’s combatfs.cfg   file into Notepad as he directed.

I then renamed it like he said to do,   and placed the combatfs.cfg file into a temporary folder where I could find it when I needed it.

Then I deleted CFS1 altogether from the hard drive of   my computer and created a new folder named “Combat Flight Simulator” locating it in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games”

I then inserted the CFS1 original game disc into the DVD Drive and instead of installing it from the disc,

I went to “run” ( hit Start, All Programs, Accessories, Run, Browse) and browsed to the DVD drive containing the CFS1 disc, and opened it to view all its files.

Then I copied each file, one by one, from the CFS1 disk into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\ Combat Flight Simulator folder.  Then, I copied the combatfs.cfg file from my temporary folder into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\ Combat Flight Simulator” folder.

I then reinserted the original CFS1 game disc into the DVD Drive and let it install the game from scratch.

Finally, I right clicked onto the CFS1 icon, left click onto Properties, left click onto compatibility, check marked the box   “Run this program in compatability mode for”: Windows 98/Windows ME.   Hit Ok.

    Viola… it worked.

  • I tried this but when I paste it into programfiles(86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator, it keeps giving me a message saying do you want to replace this, I click yes, and then it says access is denied. Any way around this?
    Saturday, March 19, 2011 1:43 AM
  • Thanks, I tried several other remedies but none worked. I used compatibility with XP 3 but I don't think it makes any difference there. I couldn't see why the way you did it would be any better but it was. I regret moving up to windows 7 for a lot of reasons like this. I appreciate all the help I can get like this. Have a good one.

  • You have to "Run as Administrator" or it won't work.

  • Thank you so very much!

    You are a life saver.

  • I do not care what everybody says, this works. I have windows 7 64 bit and I copied to note pad, saved the file like he said and put it in the directory like he said and wallah my joystick works. If you can not figure it out sorry.
    Wednesday, July 13, 2011 10:31 PM
  • I have been investigating this joystick problem on Windows 7, solved it almost, and have found out the following:

Combat Flight Simulator files installed in"C:\Program Files (x86)/Combat Flight Simulator" cannot be modified by the application.  Combat Flight Simulator tries to store the "CombatFS.CFG" in its installation folder and so can't.  It then appears to create (or Windows 7 creates) a folder "C:\Users\accountname\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Combat Flight Simulator", and stores the CFG file there, along with other info.  Hence if you copy a new CFG file to "C:\Program Files (x86)/Combat Flight Simulator", it won't do anything - you need to copy it to the VirtualStore folder as above.

The crucial data to add to the CFG file is all the date under [JOYSTICK_00] and [JOYSTICK_SLEW_00], down to the next [...].

One simple way of avoiding the VirtualStore folder is to install CFSim into a folder outside of the "C\:Program Files (x86)", e.g. "C:\Combat Flight Simulator".  However, you still have to amend the CombatFS.cfg file.

I have a Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick.  To install the drivers, I simply plugged the joystick into the USB port, and Windows found and installed drivers itself (no disc was used).  The joystick works fine in Combat Fligh Sim after amending the CombatFS.CFG file.  The Joystick Test feature also works.

    Finally, I have not solved:

Why Combat Flight Sim does not connect to the joystick itself, and

Why I get the message saying the joystick has changed to gobblygook.

However, the good news is that I can fly Spitfires around!

    Thursday, August 11, 2011 10:13 PM
  • PS - the reason Combat Flight Sim works OK if run under Admin priveges, after updating the CombatFS.CFG in "C:\Program Files (x86)/Combat Flight Simulator", is that the application CAN then update files in its aplication folder.

  • I tried this fix above and followed the instruction very carefully.  I did it over the phone with a logitech support guy.  It did not work.  Any ideas?

The Joystick is calibrated and the game is supoosed to be compatable.  The logitech guy thought it may be an issue with vista.

  • I have just read your threads.

I am rather shocked . This problem is still around .

However. I am very interested to see your answers .

I believe it is posted on some Microsoft website.

As  cfs1 , microsoft force feed back joystick , windows vista . Fault.

Microsoft original  answer was they no longer supported this game also they no longer supported this type of joystick.

They also posted Vista was incompatible .

To both of these Microsoft past products.

It was a shame as this game was very easy to use and fly an aircraft .

I am sure there must be a work around for windows 7

  •    I just want to say..CFS FAN..bless your heart....this worked like a charm....I too have Win7x64 and the logitech 3d pro extreme joystick and just as you say copy>paste>rename the notepad and then just copy and paste that in the C:\ Program Files (x86)\ Combat Flight Simulator\ XXXX ( which is the directory and it took me a while to figure that out I always called it the game program and  like you said in the  SETTINGS ''just say no '' on the joystick config window and it does give you a bunch of gobbledy gook (always wondered about that)  and bingo I am flying my favorite sim in the world.....you would be surprized at how many folks have it all wrong trying to fix this thing...from get an older joystick to rewriting the whole game.... I did not have to do a thing except install the game and copy the renamed notepad from my desk top and paste it in the game directory and then select PLAY and off we go into the wild blue yonder. What surprized me was the game automatically goes to the (x86) program files in C drive... usually older games do not. I can't thank you enough.

    Sam~

  • Am using WIN 7 Home with Logitech Attack 3 and it works fine. I copied the text as outlined above and replaced the text in my original CombatsFS.CFG and saved it.

Then went to the game folder, selected combatfs.exe  right clicked and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR and it worked fine. Just cannot change the button assignments but heck.. still shooting the jerrys :)

  • I'm using Windows 7x64 and a Sidewinder Precision Pro joy stick.  Windows evidently had an adequate driver for the joy stick because I did not install one.  After transplanting the three XP files as you directed, it worked fine, except that the hat switch on the joy stick does not work correctly for views.  It turns the whole airplane with panel, etc. and will not return to straight ahead view.  I de-programed the hat switch and all else is well.  One thing I did notice is that the file in XP was spelled "combatFS.CFG" and the same file in 7 ws spelled COMBATFS.CFG".  When I transferred the XP file to 7, I did not change the spelling.

  • Ok the problem is very simple To Fix Joystick Problem !

    Explanations:
    -------------

In Windows 95 To XP, the game search for joystick name in regedit
    at key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\..."
but in Windows > XP (or 64 bits systems) (Example: Windows 7 - 64 bits) The key is not in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" but in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"
    "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\..."

Then just patch the EXE file game to read in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and not in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
The ASM instruction is "push 80000002" to request on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" (hexadecimal values=6802000080)
and "push 80000001" to request on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" (hexadecimal values=6801000080)

Follow Simple Steps to patch properly (Change Only 2octets):
    ------------------------------------------------------------

    01) Download Hexadecimal editor (example freeware: http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD)
    02) Optional: Backup the EXE Game file Default = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator\COMBATFS.EXE"
    03) Optional: Backup the Config game file (if exists) Default = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator\COMBATFS.CFG"
    04) Open the EXE Game file "COMBATFS.EXE" with the hexadecimal editor
    05) Search for hexadecimal values an enter "6802000080" (CTRL+F -> Hexadecimal Values -> 6802000080, F3 To search next)
    06) Normally you have 3 results (Me at offsets: 1141, C60F, C6BD) (Don't Select And Change The 1st result)
    07) Select the 2nd result (Me at offset C60F) and replace "6802000080" by "6801000080"  [Just replace 02 by 01]
    08) Select the 3rd result (Me at offset C6BD) and replace "6802000080" by "6801000080"   [Just replace 02 by 01]
    09) Save the EXE game file "COMBATFS.EXE" (in hexadecimal editor)
    10) Delete the config game file "COMBATFS.CFG" (if exists)
    11) Start the Game...
    12) Joystick And Configuration Menu Works Fine NOW ;)

(If you have some problems just replace "COMBATFS.EXE" [steps 02] To restore original file)

    Enjoy ;)

  • Thank for the info. Unfortunately I don't understand the directions. I copied the string into notepad and changed the text file to the new title but I can't find "directory" in the game files  in Explorer. I am not sure if I am only to paste the 1 line or the whole string?

Obviously, I'm not very tech savvy. Any further info would be appreciated.
