SP1 ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING(0X80073701) Windows 7 Professional

    Question

  • What is preventing SP1 installation, and can I repair it without reinstalling Windows 7 and several hours of other software?  After SP1 failed via Windows Update with "ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING(0X80073701)", I did the following:

    1) As an administrator ran SPC /SCANNOW but no errors were detected.

    2) Ran the System Update Readiness Tool which found and did not repair 4 errors:

     Found 3 errors
CSI S256H Incorrect Total count: 1
CSI C Mark Deployment Missing Total count: 1
CSI Missing Winning Component Key Total count: 2

    3) Tried to use the stand-alone SP1 updater windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe but received the same error which is not surprising since step 2) above did not fix the errors found.

Any HELP! would be hugely appreciated.  Thank you!!

Run an InPlace Upgrade [1][2] to repair your windows. Your programs are still usable after doing the InPlace upgrade. This repairs all missing/damaged files.

Now you can install the Sp1 without any issues.

Thank you.  I thought about doing this, and I may try, but the files referenced by those registry keys are present, and SPC didn't find any problems with them.  Thus I am concerned the problem is a corrupt registry, not corrupt files.  Does the InPlace upgrade depend on an intact registry, or does it also repair the registry?

  • it repairs the registry, too and brings it into a working state.

  • This worked to repair the problems that the System Update Readiness Tool could not.  I have now installed SP1, and I don't seem to have lost any installed programs.  I did lose a few trivial customizations such as windows background.  Thank you.
