Seemingly irreversible 0xc0000005 rundll32.exe problem

    Question

  • I have absolutely no idea what started this problem... but i've been living with it for some time. So long that my System restore recovery points are all after when this happened. Whenever i click my Login for Windows, before it logs me in, it gives me 2 userinit.exe (0xc0000005) errors, then I log in to a blue screen. From there i have to manually open explorer via the Task Manager, after that Windows runs normally, except for the several rundll32.exe 0xc0000005 errors "rundll32.exe - Application Error, The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."

These errors occur with alot of things... i.e. Mostly everything in Control Panel cant be run, most setup.exe's dont work.. infact most .exe files dont either...

I've tried the oldest system restore i have, which still had the problem... and i cant seem to find a way to do a full system restore, I've tried pressing F8, F9, F10, F11, F12, Delete, and End at the startup screen, but nothing comes up regarding a restore, with most other computers i've had, F11 seemed to be the key...

I've looked at alot of the posts on this website regarding a fix to this problem... and i've found and attempted at least . One method was to use the Even viewer to see what the problem was, after about 30 minutes (/Sigh) i found 4 errors involving Explorer.exe, I'll list them below.

Sorry for the Error spam Tongue Tied

Well that was Method one, I got some information from it, but had no idea what to do with it, if anyone can help, it'd be appreciated Smile

Method two was disabling all startup applications and non windows services via the System Configuration Utility, but i got the two userinit.exe errors when i went to go log in.. But none of the rundll32.exe 0xc0000005 errors when i started, but they still popped up when i tried to open anything in control panel.

Thats basically my problem... if anyone has any information on how to do a full system restore on XP SP3 then i'd much rather that than a solution to this mountain of a problem :3

    - Thanks in advance, Lewis Walton.

  • In response to your nagging problem... I had the same issue and found the workaround for the problem.  To explain what is happening, the sound card in my DELL rig is not truely a sound card.  It is actually a simulated creative SB Audigy card created by the SigMatel and and the mother board.  The problem started when a system upgrade required configuration changes to a sound card that can not be reached.  The fix below is a work around for my system sound configuration problem that affected the same rundll32 file.  The work around was for me because the solution would be to install a new sound card and I don't have any available slots for a card.  There is no fix so and the workaround doesn't seem to affect the system sound at all so I have to assume the changes the upgrade was trying to do to the sound system were not needed in the first place

    Try the workaround...
    0. Close all running programs.
    1. go to "START" select "RUN"
    2. type "msconfig"
    3. press "ENTER"
    4. in the System Configuration Utility (SCU) select the
    "STARTUP" tab
    5. locate "Rundll32 CTMBHL"
    6. clear
the check box (uncheck) "Rundll32 CTMBHL" to stop loading the item at startup
    7. select "OK" to restart the computer
    8. during restart the SCU
will promt you to undo changes
    9. click the check box (select) "don't show this message again" and click "OK"

If this dosen't satisfy you just reactivate RUNDLL32 in the SCU to get back to ground zero.

    Good Luck!
