IIS Error: Unrecognized attribute 'targetFramework'. Note that attribute names are case-sensitive.

    General discussion

  • On a Windows 7 x64 PC, in Visual Studio 2010, I opened the Advance Compile Options dialog and from the Targeted framework dropdown list chose Install Other Frameworks option.    I downloaded and installed .NET Framework 4.0.3. Rebooted PC as required. Opened VS2010. Targeted my web app to 4.0.3. This step required closing and reopening of the project, which I did.

    My app runs fine in VS2010 but when I try to run it directly, in the browser, I get this error:

    Unrecognized attribute 'targetFramework'. Note that attribute names are case-sensitive.

    My web.config has this
       <system.web>
        <compilation debug="true" strict="false" explicit="true" targetFramework="4.0"/>
    Since I do not have a target framework mismatch, the usual cause of this error, I am wondering what is going on here.

    P.S. I cannot find a forum for IIS or ASP.NET.  here.   Please feel free to move this question.
