Windows 7 SP1 failed to install: Error 0x800f0826

    Question

  • I received the  error (0x800f0826) when attempting to install SP1 both via Windows update today. It downloads fine and installs but fails and reverts back during the reboot.  This is Windows 7 Home Premium x32 .I've run the System Update Readiness Tool with no effect. There are no hidden updates in Control Panel, the only Failed update is SP1.

    Please help!!

  • Same here, but I run Home Premium x64. I could use some help too. Apart from running the System Update Readiness Tool I have also completely uninstalled my antivirus software (Avast 5) to no avail.

  • I've seen this a couple of times in enterprises and its always been a security policy related issue.  Do either of you have anything that would restrict access to any of the component store or INF directories?

  • Hi,

to see the cause of Windows 7 update failures, we must look for error messages in the file CBS.log.

Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi logs from the folder C:\Windows\Inf and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

Jospeph or me take a look at the logs.

  • Yeah I had some problems to free HDD space in precedent attempts, but then I made it and tried again. The issue with SP1 installation came up in the last try as you can see in the files

  • I have the same issue on my Alienware M17x with Win 7 64bit. My office DELL Precision M6300 with Win7 64bit will accept the installation.

    > tried via Windows Update

    > tried via standalone installer

    > tried the recommended hotfix

    > tried to install with windows services only by msconfig

    > tried to uninstall former patches and reinstalled them again

Nothing works. When SP1 is installed the configuring at restart will go to 3%. After restart again to 3% to revert the changes. I hope (!!!) that we'll get a solution by Microsoft or a hint what is responsible for this installation fail.

I'm looking into the new logs Soulreaver843, you have a lot of pending victims.  Do you have any odd permissions on your system drive by chance?  How are you installing the service pack?  From standalone media or WU?

  • I had both the problems in fact, I missed the ATI drivers which I put back in the windows folder using Option 2 in the link provided. Then I had also a permission issue, I solved that by putting temporary an Everyone permission with Full Control to the windows folder.

After that I was able to install SP1 succesfully. Anyway is there a tool or a guide to set the correct permissions for drive c: or the windows folder?

In any case thanks to both Joseph and Andre for your help! Keep up the good work guys :)

  • I've got the problem on my machine as well.

SP1 installed fine on my grandparent's machine (that I built) - 7 Home Premium 32-Bit

    I've got 7 Ultimate 64-Bit

At first I was getting the 0x800f0268 - and for me it would stop configuring at 1% reboot, restore previous settings and log-on on that reboot.

I have also tried Workaround 1 for Phyxion (sort of, as I use Driver Cleaner, but the backups were annoyingly corrupt). I successfully did Workaround 2. The same issue still persisted.

I then tried the the System Update Readiness Tool, and it allows the configuration to get to 14% (AFAICR) and it will deliver no failed message and reboot, then it will start from 7% again [strangely], get to 11% and fail, then 'restore previous settings', reboot again, do some 2 second configuration and then log back on. It will then deliver the error: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002)

You can check my logs - https://cid-dde58d9bbf46886e.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Shared

Try checking with Dell to see if they have any issues or even gave "approval" [go ahead] to install.

  • Having tried the above solutions for missing ATI and Nvidia drivers as I hade a driver cleaner in the past the given solutions did not work for me. What did work was installing the MS System Update Readiness Tool - "Windows6.1-KB947821-v10-x64"(KB947821), http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=44e15787-66b0-4e9c-9c3b-1fc9ea40f69f (x86) or http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=914FBC5B-1FBA-4BAE-A7C3-D2C47C6FCFFC - (x64). Having installed this tool the SP1 update ran smooth for me.

First I tried Workaround 1, no dice and sfc /scannow came back with corrupted files.

Then Workaround 2 with my Win 7 DVD, and although sfc /scannow reported no problems, no dice.

Then I installed KB947821, all good.

this is the same. It also removes the Inbox drivers. Avoid such tools, please.

  • Probably good advice in this context but for years left over display drivers caused all sorts of conflicts with ppl's systems and there was a need for such tools. In fact I used these tools for years with XP and never had an issue installing service packs. For my part this begs the question why the absence of a few display driver sets threw SP 1 for Windows 7 so spectacularly. Thankfully display driver sets have improved immensely negating the need for lengthy uninstalliations before installing the new drivers but this has not always been the case.

  • I bought DriverCleaner.net back when I was using Windows XP.   I was trying to install a new ATI Video Driver.  After installing it and rebooting my system, it would no longer boot into windows or boot using safe mode.  I make image copies of my operating system (Acronis True Image).   I reloaded my operating system image using Acronis True Image and tried again.  Same results, A system that would no longer boot.  I did some research and bought DriverCleaner.net.  I followed the instructions and I was able to get the new ATI video card drivers installed and have a system that would boot.

Maybe there is no need for software like this.    The one thing I know is that  the Ideal world of "Plug and Play" just does not exist.  It is getting better but still has a long way to go.

  • André and Joseph,

I've tried restoring all the drivers that were removed by DriverSweeper, and have also restored all the drivers manually from the download links that were posted in another forum.  I've also run the System Update Readiness tool several times.  After taking these measures, Windows Update finally allowed me to successfully download and install SP1.  However, upon reboot, at 1% it says "Configuration Failed.  Reverting Changes...".  Then Windows boots normally.

I run Win7 Ultimate, and have 45.2GB of free space on my boot drive.  I also have System Restore and some other services that I did not need disabled.  Are there any services you think may be effecting the ability to install SP1?

After poking around my logs, it looks as though I'm still missing some files, but it's all greek to me.  Here's the link - any advice you can offer to help me to avoid an inplace upgrade or reinstall would be much appreciated!

  • Hi

I am hoping that this is going to Andre Ziegler or Joseph

I am having the same problem as many of the people on this post - I cannot install SP1. Prior to that, some percentage of the Windows Updates, usually related to security issues, have also failed to install, always with the same error code that leads no where. I tried working with a Microsoft person (incident SRX1149958403) but that was not productive. The suggested remedy was a windows reinstall. One of my friends also had an SP1 issue, and working with some people at HP, they reinstalled all the windows updates and then installed them again, in some proper sequence.

I have copied the files that you suggested in the post (go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi logs from the folder C:\Windows\Inf) and posted them to my ftp site. You can find them at ftp://ftp.stepner.com/Windows%20Files/

Can you help explain my issues?

  • Hi, I have a lot of problems with installing Win7 Service Pack 2. Installation completes, but can't configure the windows, and reverts back again. Whenever I restart the PC, the same thing happens again and again. My configuration stucks when it reaches 99%. But quite slow after 86%. I have some security software installed. But I'm not sure if they are the problem. Please have a look at my logs: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=0cfd9888e12c5de8&sc=documents&nl=1&uc=1&id=CFD9888E12C5DE8%21309# I'd appreciate any effort to help me out. • Hi there, after months of the same issue, I've finally got Service Pack 1 installed.  Here's what I did:

    1) I downloaded and ran the system updater readiness tool and the troubleshooter as described here:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/troubleshoot-problems-installing-service-pack

The troubleshooter takes ages and appears to do nothing, but it does finally work...

    2) After that I uninstalled my Antivirus (which is avast antivirus).  I chose to do that after reading about that elsewhere.

    3) I then went into the Windows Upgrade via the control panel and chose to download and install SP1 and low and behold it worked!!!!

    I've then obviously re-installed avast

It is such a sweet feeling to finally have this working after months of hell.  I hope this helps someone else.

    Best of luck to everyone

  • Hi

I receive the error code 0x800f0826 too.

Here's a link to the log files etc

    https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=f1dc4f353e082863#!/?cid=F1DC4F353E082863&id=F1DC4F353E082863!132!cid=F1DC4F353E082863&id=F1DC4F353E082863!129

I followed step 1 on the link http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/02/24/windows-7-service-pack-1-fails-to-install-with-0x800f0a13-or-0x800f0826.aspx

Driver Sweeper didn't pick up anything. I've not used it before but have used DriverMax to update drivers. Could that be an issue?

  • As it's now Sept 11, I'm wondering if this thread is still being watched.

I've tried to install Win7 SP1 for some time now, and was heartened to see that BigFrank256 had succeeded.

I've run the updater readiness tool (both Windows6.1-KB947821-v12-x86.msu and Windows6.1-KB947821-v14-x86.msu) which completed with no errors.

I've run the trouble shooter, which claimed to find and fix two errors.

I've deleted my Antivirus software (Zone Alarm), and I still get a report of a system error about 5 seconds into the installation.

I gather the drill is to Open a SkyDrive account, gather and zip up all the log and other files mentioned at the start of this thread and post the link here.  Is that still being supported.

Question:  I've made a lot of tries at this and have some pretty long log files.  Should I zip up everything and send it all, or would it be more convenient for you if I cleared out any of the log directories, tried again, and zipped up just the logs for the current failure.

Fortunately, I can still process (most) other updates, but SP1 will not install.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Okay, I looked at the CBS logs and found references to corrupted files.  Taking a few clues from other forums I decided to do a Windows 7 repair install, which included the following

    1. Found Microsoft's online instructions on how to do the repair install
    2. Back up all the data I could find that didn't already have an up-to-date off-system backup, which fortunately wasn't much.
    3. Ran the repair install, which failed with a locked up machine
    4. Removed the VPN application the repair backup had complained about.
    5. Removed the Zone Alarm firewall and virus software (so it wouldn't reappear after reboots.
    6. Reran the repair install, which worked this time
    7. Processed about 110 Windows 7 updates.
    8. Processed the Windows 7 SP1 update, which took awhile but worked this time.
    9. Reinstalled the Zone Alarm software from a previous update.
    10. Processed updates for the Zone Alarm software.
    11. Started a full system deep scan given the amount of time spent without Zone Alarm running.

I'm now checking out applications to see what if anything was disrupted by the Windows repair install.  So far, so good; lots of time and steps to do all this, but probably worth it go get things fixed.

    Hope this helps others.

  • I have been installing it via updates

    1) it installs (so I thought) sucessfully it says.  Asks for restart
    2) upon restart it says installation error and reverse changes.
    3) when that is done an error dialog pops up - More information - state - NO ERROR FOUND

Where to now?  This has now happened at least 20 times.

How can it roll back because of an error and then say no error found?  or does that refer to a successful rollback and not the original error as it implies.

  • Hi, don't know if this will help anyone here, but I had the same problem with this update failing to install on restart. It installed ok up until that point but then failed and reverted to original settings.

I have discovered that a program called Trusteer Rapport which was recommended by my internet banking site, was causing this install to fail, and on uninstalling this program completely and restarting the computer, I was able to install service pack 1 on my windows 7 64 bit pc with no further problems.

I have asked this company to explain why this happens, and will post their reply, in the meantime, if any of you have this, or similar software installed, I would suggest you uninstall it and try the update again, you can re - install it later.

Hope this helps some of you.

  • So, Most likely this is related to locking down the ability to install USB Portable storage devices, whether it was done per machine or per GPO, access to two files, usbstor.inf and .pnf.

I found an actual KB to cite the error:
On a computer running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, service pack 1 installation fails with error message 0x800f0826
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2575082

I am in a secure facility and the use of external USB devices is prohibited by policy and enforced with GPO. The two files in %systemroot%\inf [USBSTOR.INF, USBSTOR.PNF] were set to deny access for SYSTEM account, and no other access settings were specified, preventing the mounting and usage of USBDEVICES, access to these files, and any updates affecting those files would fail.

Problem was that these files need to be readable and writeable during the SP1 update, and SP1 couldn't do it, but the error was too vague.

I was first trying with shavlik (patch management server), then by downloading a full copy of the SP1 and copying the sp1 update locally. Failed both ways.

Setting the permissions per the article KB2575082 resolved the 0x800f0826. Hope this helps others. This was on my 2008 R2 Box, but the same issue applies to Windows 7 Sp1 as seen in the 2575082 article.

If in fact your org is using a GPO to set the permissions, this will fail becuase the 15 minute policy refresh may come around and reset your permissions. To get around it, I installed subinacl on my server and created a looping batch file where the permissions were constantly being applied over and over during the install.

the file looked like this:  subusbstor.cmd

    subinacl /file %systemroot%\inf\usbstor.inf /grant=system=F
    subinacl /file %systemroot%\inf\usbstor.pnf /grant=system=F

    subinacl /file %systemroot%\inf\usbstor.inf /grant=%hostname%\administrators=F
    subinacl /file %systemroot%\inf\usbstor.pnf /grant=%hostname%\administrators=F

    subusbstor.cmd

After SP1 was done, the server rebooted itself, and i removed the file, allowing the permissions to go back to deny for system.

  • The error you reference above isnt an issue, you'll see those when the initiator kicks off each time.  Have you looked over my blog on this error?

  • @jocson:

Laptop has a "NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M" Videoadapter, there no ATI Drivers on this System.

We never used "Driver Sweeper utility from Phyxion" or something else...

    any more Ideas??

    Tuesday, January 24, 2012 12:54 PM
  • The point in the blog isnt merely that ATI drivers have this issue, its that any driver could potentially be a problem.  So, to that end, do you have any group policies in place that would block a driver install (USB is a very common one)?  If so, that could be a problem.  Do you or have you used any drive sweeper type utilities on this machine?  That could cause an issue.  Lastly, do you have any intrusion software?  Sometimes these capture the initial files and it causes the SPI to fail.  Disable or remove these and try again.

You should be able to see some of these items, if driver related, in the %windir%\INF\setupapi.dev.log

  • After having many issues with trying to install SP1 to windows 7 64 bit the only thing that worked was to do a repair install (as mentioned above).

This actually took quite a few hours so be prepared.

Upon restart i used the standalone sp1 package (before i did any other updates via windows update). Yay it worked.

The only thing i then did after this was to install updated nvidia graphics drivers. I then did all my normal windows update stuff and am now back to normal. Im not sure what stopped my initial install of SP1 as all my workarounds failed.

I should have just done the repair install straight off the bat and it would have saved a whole lot of issues.....Cheers to all

  • I don't know much about any of this stuff you're talking about. I'm an old great grandma and this is what I did. I surfed around many sites and decided to low-level my both computers. After I did that, I re-installed windows 7 Home Premium sp 1 32 bit on both and they both work. The only problem is, well, I thought I installed Home Premium, but installed Ultimate, instead; and then they won't accept my win # for both computers. Both came with Windows 7 HP SP 1, so now I reinstalled over both. I partitioned the extra volume and now have two win 7 installs on both the laptop and the desktop. So far, both are working fine; even though one computer was a 64 bit computer.   ;)
