System Image Restore Failed 0x80042302

    Question

  • I sucessfully created an system image of my Windows 7 Ultimate machine (via Windows backup and restore in the control panel).

When I try to do a system image restore (from a system repair disc), I immediately get this error message.

    "The system image restore failed.

Error Details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)"

    This is strange because:

    (1) the creation of the system image completes without any errors (and I cannot seem to find any errors in the event log)
    (2) I am running the "system image restore" from a "system repair disc", so there is really not event log to check during the restore (unless there is a way to see these errors?)

    Please advise how to resolve?

  • How do you get the system repair disc?

You may try the method “To restore using preinstalled recovery options” from the following website.

Restore your computer from a system image backup

  • Arthur,
Thank you for your link - I am using the System Repair Disc (created in Windows 7) - i.e. option 3 "To restore using a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc" because there is a problem with the old disk and I am trying to set up a new disk that does not have windows installed on it (so I can not use option 1 or 2 from the link you provided).

Any suggestions on how to fix this or why this error message is happening?

  • What is the model of your computer? I suspect that the hard drive is not recognized because of the SATA controller driver. I suggest you load the latest BIOS. If there is any SATA controller driver on the motherboard website, download it and load the driver. Then try to restore again.

If it is the cause, you are not able to clean install Windows 7 either. You will see no hard drives when you are prompted to select the system partition.

  • If I make a new System Image Backup to the same USB HDD, it restores fine. But when I try to restore the image I WANT, with all my programs installed, etc, it fails. Both images are on the same USB drive and Restore Center can see both. The HDD is the same size. I notice after booting with Repair Disk and trying to restore the image, Diskpart shows the boot partition to be D: and the recovery hidden partition to be C:. Even after switching those with Diskpart I get the same error. I restored the Gateway image from the hidden partition for a new clean install and got the same error. I changed Drive letters with Diskpart so the active partition is C: and the same error. Can you check the Application log from the Cmd shell? After rebooting into Windows, vssadmin provides writers and providers below. Application log shows no errors. I opened the backup image folders on the USB drive and UAC granted me privileges to read the folders, but afterward, the error remains. The error is:

    "The system image restore failed:

  • Can someone please help me understand how to even find out more information about "Error Details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)"?

  • How did you locate the log?

I have spent hours looking for a solution.

Thankfully, from your error list I was able to figure out that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) needed to be started. Solved the problem and system restore is working.

    This page had some clues
