Windows 2008 SP2 RC: SP1 Required!?!

    Question

  • Hello.  I downloaded Windows 2008 SP2 RC standalone.  I run the executable and get a message:

"You need to install Windows Server Service Pack 1 before continuing"

Win2008 Server comes with SP1.  There is a link on the window: "Go online to install service pack 1"

That goes here, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330, but as you would expect, Vista SP1 does not want to be installed on Server 2008.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Yet another! This is on an SBS 2008 box, I have a run a number of tests and this only occurs on x64 installs - anyone else verify this, or know of a fix! The original post was for the RC, but it is still broken in the gold release...

  • Adding to the above, the readiness tool keeps installing the same update KB947821 each time.

  • Same problem for me:

    - Using Windows Update, SP2 fails with:

    Installation was not successful

A system error prevented the service pack from installing.  Please download and run the "Check for System Update Readiness " tool at...

I ran that tool, but it did not fix the problem.

    - Using the stand-alone SP2 installer, I get the same "you need to install Windows Server Service Pack 1 before continuing " message.

    - Also, using Windows Update to install KB970238 fails with Code 800B0100.

I've never had an update fail to install before today.  I did not have these problems on a twin server (identical hardware and software).  Both are domain controllers.

  • Same here but I raised it as a support incident with MS on 12 June 09 and they have come back to me to confirm it is a bug in SP2. They are working on a fix.

  • No chance for me.
    SP2 on Windows 2008 x64 still asks for SP1.
Other critical updates such as KB968537, KB961501, KB970238 etc. fail with error 0x800B0100

  • TheodoreC: You're on the right track, the output is from the System Update Readiness Tool (CHECKSUR.log) which checks and attempts to resolve certain conditions that could prevent the installation of updates or other software.  The *.mum files are the list of updates missing from the computer in questions.  Once you have installed the missing files into %systemroot%\servicing\packages then you will be able to install Service Pack 2.

For everyone else, after your run the tool, it will create the following logs and CHECKSUR.log will list your missing files, again just get those files from either installing the missing updates or copying them from a working Windows Server 2008/Vista SP1 computer that contains those updates:
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

  • the answer from Sean van Osnabrugge seems to work.I don't get the error anymore...i need to resize the disk because i'm out of disk space but it looks like it actually wants to install the service pack now.
    finally! Proposed Answer

  • I finally have SP2 installed.  Apparently KB970238 was blocking it.  The only files reported missing by CHECKSUR.log were five .mum files from KB970238.  I tried a stand-alone installation of KB970238 (failed).  Then Windows Update again (failed).   I copied the files from another server and that allowed me to install SP2, but pesky KB970238 is still seen as needed, and it still fails.  Any ideas on how to get KB970238 installed, or determine why it fails?

  • Anyone have any luck with this? I've got two servers running Server 2008 Enterprise x64 as Hyper-V hosts. One of them installed SP2 with no problem but the other has shown the same problems as everyone here. So far I've had no luck getting SP2 to install. Installing SP2 from WU gives error 800B0100, and trying to install it from the Network tells me that I need SP1 installed first.

I've tried the batch file suggested earlier in the thread, it didn't help. I tried the Windows Update repair tool, it didn't help either. The CheckSUR.log doesn't seem to be up to date, it's last revision was on 6/24/2009. CBS.log was updated today though. It wouldn't let me open it but it would let me copy it and then open the copy. There are a LOT of entries for this last attempt with Windows Update, much more than I would post here. I can provide a copy of the file to anyone who asks for it. Any suggestions on getting SP2 installed?

  • Hi everyone,

We finally got SP2 to install on the problemmatic machines.

We had to download the installation packages for the missing items listed in CheckSUR.log.  Then unpack the installers for these patches and manually copy each missing MUM and the cat files of the same name in the C:\Windows\servicing\packages folder.  Once all the missing mum/cat file pairs were added to the servicing folder and the CheckSUR.log was coming up clean.  We restart the system, download the SP2 manual installer (which had a newer date than the first one we downloaded) and the SP2 installation completed.

  • Interesting. Someone above or in a related thread said they tried that but the .mum files were not in the update installers. I'll give it a try a little later today and see what happens.

  • Alright I seem to be making progress here. Like a dummy I didn't realize that the SUR log would only get upated when that particular program was run. In any case the files reference in the SUR log were the same ones they referenced from when it was previouly updated in June. Here's the list.

    Checking packages.
    (f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB953838_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.3.mum

    (f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB953838~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.3.mum

I downloaded and extracted the files from the KB article mentioned. That KB seems to apply to everything from IE 5.0.1 to IE7. I just assumed that since it was there in June it pertained to IE7 (I've already upgraded to IE8) so that's what I downloaded. I found the first two files but not the last file. I searched Google for that file name and one person said they copied "update.mum" and it took it. I tried that but it doesn't seem to have helped. I tried to rerun the SUR tool but it says it doesn't apply to my system. Do I need to reboot before rerunning the SUR tool? If so I'll need to wait till this evening as this is a production server.

Edit: Nevermind about the "does not apply" error, I didn't realize I was trying to run the KB953838 update not the SUR tool. *smacks head*

Edit2: Alrightey it seems to be fixed. Here are a few pointers to help others. The files the SUR log references will most likely only tell you *.mum files are missing to begin with. When you copy those files look to see if their corresponding *.cat files are there as well. If not go ahead and copy them because the next time you run the SUR tool it will tell you those are missing next. Why it doesn't tell you about those the first time I don't know. Also, in my case one file was NOT in the extracted update. I found a suggestion to rename update.mum and update.cat to the missing files and then copy them to the packages folder. This seemed to work for me. I relaunched SP2 installer and it no longer told me I needed SP1 first. I aborted the install as it will want to reboot the server but it was going to run. Thanks everyone!

This seems to be the problem also here.

Any ideas where to get the missing file mentioned above?

  • right click on servicing packages folder
    go to properties
    security
    advanced
    owner
    edit
and add your account as owner
then go to permissions tab and give you account full permissions

you could skip the advenced>owner>edit step if you can change them without it.
then you can overwrite the files.

  • I had the same issue and was able to resolve it by

    Installing Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x64.msu

Then going to %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log  to view the missing *.mum and *.cats files

you can copy these files from a working server ……….. the file  location is C:\Windows\servicing\packages

You must give yourself ownership to C:\Windows\servicing\packages before your able to paste files

  • A valid resolution seems to be following these steps.

    - Try first to install all the other Windows updates but SP2
    - Download  System Update Readiness Tool (check compatibility with your OS version)
    - Run System Update Readiness Tool (It looks like running the Windows Update AND may take a while...)
    - Check lines indicating missing installation files at %windir%\logs\cbs\CheckSUR.log , for example:
    "CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB970238 ~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.0.mum"
    - You can see the identifier of the missing update package inside the file name (above : KB970238)
    - Download and run stand-alone installers for missing update packages (e.g. Windows6.0-KB970238-x64.msu)
    - If a stand-alone installer fails to run:
       - Take the ownership of the %windir%\ servicing\Packages folder and grant Full Access (to Administrators group, as you are one)
       - Unpackage the stand-alone installer using common zip-tools
       - Copy missing files from unpackage folder to %windir%\ servicing\Packages folder
       - If Windows Update complains about missing updates, you can run stand-alone installers again - after copying the files

    NB!
It is possible that some of the missing files are NOT in the unpackaged stand-alone installer. If this is the case, you have to copy the missing files from %windir%\ servicing\Packages of some other Windows server , with all the updates installed. Then follow the procedure above again. You can always check the missing files by running the System Update Readiness Tool again.

    - Finally - install Windows Server SP2

PS: Stand-alone installer of SP2 gives a little more exact error message than on-line Windows Update, and you may see a name of missing installation package during the failing SP2 installation without running the System Update Readiness Tool

  • If you receive the Windows Update error 800b0100, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is not registered with Windows correctly. The System Update Readiness Tool can correct some conditions that cause this error. To use the tool, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the System Update Readiness Tool webpage. In the Information for advanced users section, find the version of Windows and system type of your computer, and then click the link to download the System Update Readiness Tool. If you don't know which version of Windows you have, see View your computer information.

    2. Run Windows Update again.

      Note

Typically, the scan takes 15 minutes or less, but it can take longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.

If the problem persists after you take these steps, go to the Microsoft Update Solution Center website to find more information about the error code or to request support by e‑mail.
