setup vpn connection with pptp

    Question

  • Hi

I need to setup a vpn connection using pptp. But however i'm not able to find it.
When searching at google I can see several pictures setting up vpn, where you have to choose pptp as the type of vpn at the security tab, when setting the properties for your vpn connection.

However I don't have that possibility. The "type of vpn" is not visible. The first point at my security tab is data encryption.

I'm running windows 7 ultimate danish edition

  • Cool, thank you, you solved my problem.

When I select "set up a new connection or network" I get the following screen:

If I select to configure the internet connection I get this screenshot:

But if I select to configure the internet connection later I'm ending up with the right screen:

Thanks for your help and patience

See this for help. This will setup the PPTP VPN client on your Win 7 machine...

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Why-am-I-having-problems-with-my-VPN-connection

Once you get that setup you can open the Network and Sharing Center and use the Change adapter settings at the left to check/change the properties of the VPN connection you just created. Right click on the VPN connection and select Properties to do that. Note the VPN type defaults to Automatic so there really is no need to change that. See the screen shot...

  • It doesn't solve my problem. It seems like if the vpn type is set to automatic, it doesn't work. I'm not able to see if automatic is chosen, or to change it. The field is missing.

When setting up my vpn connection, I can only chose pppoe.

I get an error 651 when connecting.

  • How do you connect to the internet normally, ie. dialup/cable/DSL?

FYI I can get to the first link...

  • ups, something was missing in the first link

My normal internet is cable, where I log on to a firewall, before I got access to the internet.

I have no problem running a vpn connection with pptp with my laptop running windows xp.

  • Is this Windows 7 PC/laptop part of a domain? If so its possible your network admins at work have configured it via a group policy not to allow what your trying to do.

  • No, unfortunately that is not the problem.
It is installed on a pc, and is not a member of a domain. It's located in my own workgroup.

I'm running a rtm version, but would that be a problem?

I do know I had no issues like this when I ran the RTM but I can't speak to the Danish version. Do you know of anyone else that has the same Danish RTM version that can create a PPTP VPN connection correctly?

To be clear your creating or trying to create the VPN like this right?

    1. Open Network and Sharing Center
    2. Select Set up a new connection or network
    3. Select Connect to a workplace
    4. Then create the VPN as illustrated in this screen shot.
