Service Pack 3 Blue Screen (BSoD) -- STOP: 0X000000FC (OXBA5038E8 OX0A446963 XBA503848 0X00000001)

    Question

  • I downloaded SP3 via windows live updates, and am getting the Blue Screen of Death.

    Here is the problem: I cannot get into the OS at all...

    -Won't boot in 'safe mode'
    -Won't boot in 'last known good configuration'

    (Auto Restart isn't the problem, it is simply going to BSoD -- STOP: 00X000000FC (OXBA5038E8 OX0A446963 XBA503848 0X00000001)  It is referring back to this same BSoD upon any attempt to start in safe mode or last known good configuration.

    -Dell Dimension E510
    -Win XP Media Center SP2
    -Intel Dual Core Processor, 2.8
    -Graphics Card: NVidia Ge Force 7800

    Can someone please give me a way to get into the OS so I can get to System Restore (I made a Restore Point before "updating").

    I found a fix to the problem.  You will need a Windows XP Reinstallation disk, or a bootable floppy disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP.

     

    The instructions are found at the link below under 'Method 4: Use Recovery Console.'

    This will fix the problem. 

    (Note that after step #8 it will ask you to access a restore point and that is what I did, rather than continuing to step #9.)

     

    Also, Microsoft is offering free unlimited installation and compatibility support for Windows XP, Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is valid until April 14, 2009.

     

    They are EXTREMELY helpful--in my case at least--e-mailed me instructions in 5 minutes.  Very quick and efficient.

    I also made a restore point but cannot access it.

  • Not all 0x000000FC stops are caused by the same problem.  So not all of these solutions might be relevant to you.

     

    Somtimes, 0x000000FC is just another manifestation of the 0x0000007E stop caused by bad preinstalled images of Windows XP, on a PC that has an AMD processor.

    You must NOT follow the trouble-shooting steps in the above articles if your processor is an Intel.

     

    Otherwise, stop 0x000000FC is caused by badly-coded ancient third-party device drivers which do not function correctly when "no-execute" hardware memory protection is enabled.  For one example of this that came to light when XP SP2 was released, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/878474 .  You might be able to adapt the techniques in that KB article to disable the bad device driver if you know its name.

     

    Does the STOP message identify the name of the device driver causing the STOP?  It will be of the form something.SYS

  • No, it doesn't identify the name of the device driver, it just says 'Attempt to execute non-executable memory.'

    Also, I do have a Win XP SP2 disk; would it be possible to activate a restore point, or get into windows from the disk???
    I know I can get a C:/WINDOWS from the disk, just not sure what to do from there.

  • The problem with the fix listed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/878474 is that you have to be able to run safe mode...which I can't.

    Before delving into the Recovery Console on the XP installation CD, check your system BIOS settings to see whether it is possible to disable the "no-execute" feature of the processor.  This will give you a quick-and-dirty way of booting XP from hard disk.  You then need to find out which device driver causes the no-execute STOP, and disable it or update it to a newer more compatible version.  I wouldn't leave this hardware feature disabled for too long, as it is a valuable protection against trojans and viruses which try to exploit buffer overflows.

     

    Otherwise, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058 for use of the Recovery Console.  These commands look similar to the commands in a Windows Command Prompt window, but in fact they are very different in some areas.  The "disable" command can be used to disable a named driver.  You still have the problem of working out which driver is causing the issue.

    .  Unfortunately, I haven't managed to get any of the suggested fixes to work.  For example, the file referred to in Method 4 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249 does not seem to exist on my machine.

     

    I am a bit of a novice when it comes to technical PC stuff, so please bear with me if this is a silly question rdhw, but how do you actually check the system BIOS settings?

  • When your computer initially starts, at startup screen, you press F2 (on my machine anyway), and it will take you to BIOS...it'll flash something in the top right of the screen such as F2 - SETUP or something like that, and you have to hit the corresponding key before the load screen disappears.

  • On August 26, 2008 I had the same problem with the code STOP: 0x000000FC.  I have a DELL XPS 400 with XP Media Center SP2.  I called Microsoft and 2.5 hours later I was up and running.  Their support helped me repair Windows with the disk that came with my computer.  Every thing is now running.

  • I was having the exact same problem.

    Turning off the execute protection in the BIOS did the trick.

  • the problem reffers to the .dll file igxpdx32.dll i was having problems playing FFXI so i changed the following file as i was gettin the BSOD when trying to play anyways after playing the game successfully i thoght nothing else of it. i got up the following morning and i kept getting the BSOD 0x00000FC so i booted in to safe mode replaced the original igxpdx32.dll now it works like a charm.    Hope this helps

    I uninstalled all of the hotfixes that were installed from a patch Tuesday and this fixed it. I am currently installing each hotfix 1 at a time to find the culprit. If I find the one I will post it in here.
