Change Windows 8 Product Key to activate

    Question

  • Just downloaded Windows 8 from MSDN Subscriber Downloads. WHERE do you enter a product key?  I go to Control Panel, System and Security, System.  I see the View details in Windows Activation and select it.  The only problem is it only lets me ACTIVATE!  I see nowhere to CHANGE!  Please help!

  • If you are using Windows 8 Enterprise its an issue a number of people have run into.  Take a look at the following thread for a resolution:

  • Start "run" and type SLUI 3, and then you get the activation screen.

  • For who is interested, Run cmd as administrator
    then:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>Cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk TYPE-YOUR-KEY-RIGHT-HERE

    You will see:

Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Installed product key TYPE-YOUR-KEY-RIGHT-HERE successfully.

    And try this:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>Cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato

    You will see:

Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Activating Windows(R), Professional edition (a-long-guid-here) ...
    Product activated successfully.
