Windows 7 x86 & KB981177 - Deny Un-Pin from Start Menu

    Question

  • I'm trying to keep my users from deleting common items I create on the Start Menu with a local policy. I enabled the policy Do not allow pinning programs to the Taskbar on the computer. I'm still able to unpin. I then found this hotfix (support.microsoft.com/kb/981177) installed it and get the following message: "The update is not applicable to your computer."

This W7 laptop I'm working on is fully patched. What's going on?

  • Hi,

You may get this message when the update has already installed on your computer.

Do you have Service Pack 1 installed?  KB981177 was included in the SP1 release.

Also, if you enable Do not allow pinning programs to the Taskbar policy, users cannot change the programs that are currently pinned to the taskbar. This will not affect the Start Menu.

    Thanks.
