PPTP VPN Blue Screen

    Question

  • I am consistently getting a Blue Screen when attempting to connect to a Windows Server PPTP VPN from Windows 7.
    Problem occurs when using wireless. I have a Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter in a Acer Extensa 5220 Notebook. Latest update for the driver was installed via Windows Update. Also used driver supplied by Acer, same error occurs.
    The Blue Screen error is related to afd.sys.

    Anyone having similar problems or know of a fix?

    First, I would like to confirm whether the blue screen only pops up when trying to connect to Windows Server PPTP VPN or it pops up all the time. Does the blue screen occur when connecting Internet via wired cable?

     

    Since Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are usually caused by kernel portion components, such as a hardware device, third-party drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services).

     

    Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

     

    1. Boot the computer in Clean Boot for a test.

     

    2. Temporarily disable all unnecessary hardware devices in Device Manager, such as Modem, sound card or external device.

     

    For detail steps, we can refer to the link below:

     

    Device Clean Boot

     

    3. Run antivirus program and perform a full scanning.

     

    4. Upgrade the Wireless adapter driver. If the error still occurs, please use wired cable instead for a test.

    If the issue persists, please upload the minidump file (%systemroot%\minidump) to SkyDrive ( www.skydrive.live.com ), then share the link to me. I will be glad to assist you to analysis the data.

    I found the blue screen problem when connect pptp vpn, my problem came from AVG Antivirus (Version 9).

    I have same problem as SimonABCS. But my anti-virus program is AVG Antivirus (version 9) same as supraduffy.
    The problem occurs when using wireless connect to PPTP VPN Server frequently.

    I will remove AVG Antivirus program and try to use another to test.

  • Hi sorry for wrong click,

    I try this and work well,


    Open AVG Internet Security --> Tools -->  Firewall settings --> goto Areas and Adapters profiles --> Allow your Network Interface (devices) and your PPTP VPN Connections.

    Goto Profiles --> Defined networks --> make sure all your Network Interfaces (Device) and your VPN PPTP are mark as safe.

  • I have 2 different systems that do it..one was using AVG and now is using Mcafee Total Protection...my other laptop is AVG free...
    Can't for the life of my figure out why PPTP disconnects (and only the disconnect) kills my machines.

  • I had this same issue on Vista 32bit as well as Win7 32 bit, on 2 separate laptops, whether using wired or wireless connection.

    I found this:

    Ran the command:
    netsh int ip reset

    I use AVG Free as well, and believe it changed the TCPIP parameters, but I can't find the setting from above or documentation regarding this change.

    This appears to have solved the problem.

  • I have Windows 7 64 bit Professional edition.  When I connect to a PPTP VPN connection everything works fine until I go to disconnect.  On disconnect I get a blue screen.   It does not happen every time but about 75% of the time that I disconnect from the VPN.  I have tried the netsh int ip reset command and it seemed fine that day but I have gotten the same blue screen after that.  Below is the link to the dmp file that I have from the problem.  I just wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations.   Thanks!

    AVG Free (supposedly) doesn't have the firewall modules...so there wouldn't be any settings.

    I've had the same problem with 32bit Windows 7 & Vista.

    The netsh int ip reset fixes it but I find I have to re run it whenever AVG does a program update.

    I also have Shrewsoft VPN client installed, but this doesn't seem to be an issue for me as the problem occured prior to installing the shrewsoft client, and installing it didn't cause it.
