Can I install Windows7 onto an external USB hard drive?

    Question

  • Hi Vlad0,

Thank you for providing detailed instructions of how to install Win7 on External USB drive. I did go twice through all 14 steps that you provided on 4/22/2009 at 6:42 PM on the forum. I have Win Vista Ultimate on my Toshiba Satellite laptop and i didn't have any issues to run Win7 from Internal VHD partition but when I'm trying to boot it from my USB VHD partition it has boot error showing that boot record is bad and is restarting computer. I'm not sure how this USBBootWatcher working because when I execute it I don't know how it is running (on background or as service) and what it is doing. If you don't mind can you please give more details on this utility and possibly description of your boot record for USB to start Win7 on the same forum or send it to my email: [PI redacted]. Thanks again for your great efforts.

  • One cannot run Windows 7 on an external hard drive.  Windows 7 was designed to run only on an "internal" hard drive.
