Windows 7 sp1 failing wtih 80004005

    Question

  • Instaling my last Win7 sp1 and it gets a 80004005.  x64.  I know from other threads that this is a generic error.  I've tried the following:

    1. sfc/scannow - indicated no errors

    2.  System update readiness tool - cbs logs indicated no errors

    3.  Followed this http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2011/03/22/windows-7-sp1-installation-failed-with-error-0x80004005-e-fail.aspx

    No change.

In reviewing the cbs.log file the only thing I can see is ths:

2012-01-30 01:53:05, Info                  CBS    SQM: Requesting upload of all unsent reports.

Short of doing a repair install, why can't the tools that are designed to help with sp1, help with sp1 installs?

  • Just download the standalone package from Microsoft and install it and see if the error pops up again.

  • Installation of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 fails with errors 0x8004a029 or 0x80004005 - E_FAIL

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530477

It mentions: This can occur if the number of installed network filter drivers exceeds the specified limit. By default, Windows 7 has a limit of 8, with a maximum allowable limit of 14.

To resolve this problem, adjust the value of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\ registry subkey.

  • 1) Error Code: 0x800F0805 (Can't install SP1)

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/error-code-0x800f0805-cant-install-sp1/da275dd9-a20f-424c-ab6f-038392372440

How to perform a repair installation of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Performing a repair installation will restore the current Windows installation to the version of the installation DVD. This also requires the installation of all updates that are not included on the installation DVD.

    2) Win7 SP1 RC1 stuck at 9% for over three hours

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproSP/thread/06a1b563-a9ce-442c-b043-498c5157e399

I instaled win7 sp1 in safe mode, and it went smoothly. As I had the same problem configuration being stuck at 9% after installation. I do hope this works for you after all you have been through. some time the simplest soulution is the best. took me two days to finally try safe mode.

    3) Windows 7 Service Pack 1 – Installation Failure ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED(0×80070005)

    http://markparris.co.uk/2011/02/22/windows-7-service-pack-1-installation-failure-error_access_denied0x80070005/

Opening from the Control Panel, Programs and Features and then by selecting “view installed updates”, I removed all the listed updates that reported ERROR_NOT_FOUND in the CBS.log. I then rebooted and attempted to reinstall Windows 7 Service Pack 1 again and hey presto, after about an hour, my laptop was up and running with Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

  • I already removed any updates that said error not found, that didn't work.  The error log points to some sort of mail dll but I've made no changes to this computer for mail, it's using Outlook.

I've tried safe mode already with the same error.

So repair install is the only option here?

What if I didn't have proper media?

  • This week there is an updated system update readiness tool to be released so I'm going to hold back and wait for that.  If that doesn't work I'll do a repair install.

But please, make this eaiser for Windows 8.  Operating systems shouldn't need to have repair installs for service packs.

  • Do you have any other laguage packs other then English?

If you do maybe remove them and leave English only untill you install sp.

You can try this batch file it helps with regular updates.

  • Nope, plain English and regular updates work just fine.  It's just the service pack that will not install.

I tried that for grins earlier, but it didn't fix the problem.  Thanks for the help though.

Want to post your CheckSUR log up on SkyDrive or somewhere, Susan? It may show what’s wrong.
It’d be interesting to compare that with the new one with a new version as well, when it comes out.

  • Yes it was the only thing that worked.

Has there been any progress?  I have this exact issue, from what i read it is due to to many network filters, meaning there must be more on my system.  i have no idea how to remove or even check for them if this is the case, please assist.

  • There was a recent Servicing patch that was just released that I'd try.

The fixit kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530477 will do the network filter fix.

If that doesn't work I did a non destructive repair install over the top.
