Finding Easy Transfer Wizard for Windows 2000 Pro to migrate to Windows 7

    Question

  • I cannot find a download for the Easy Transfer Wizard for Windows 2000. I'm looking to upgrade (clean install) a number of machines to Windows 7, but I'd like to backup all the the user files, basically use the Windows Easy Transfer what it's for. But I cannot find anywhere on Microsoft's site to download it. All I can find is the Windows XP version which states is only compatible with XP and XP x64.

If the version I need is the File and Settings Transfer Wizard, then can anyone confirm if the newer East Transfer Wizard is backwards compatible with it?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,
Windows easy transfer will not enable you to transfer data from Windows 2000 to Windows 7. However you can transfer you data to Windows Vista through easy transfer wizard.
But you can’t transfer settings through easy transfer in Windows 2000. You can only transfer your files. So I suggest you to use your hard disk to copy the data instead of using easy transfer.

If you really want to use easy transfer to transfer you data, you can transfer your data to a Vista computer (for example, your friend's computer) first, then transfer the data from Windows Vista to Windows 7.
You can refer to this to transfer from Windows 2000 to Windows Vista: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748915(WS.10).aspx

  • Nicholas,

I want to copy files from Windows 2000 to Windows 7.  Can you direct me to some instructions for doing this by using the hard disk as you suggest?

    Thank you.
