MSXML Core Services 6.0 not installing properly on Win7 x64

    Question

  • My laptop runs Windows 7 Enterprise x64 SP1.  I've got MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK, MSXML 4.0 SP3 Parser, and MSXML 4.0 SP3 Parser (KB2721691) installed.  I want to run a PowerShell 2.0 GUI from the MS Technet Gallery that requires MSXML 6.0, but I'm haing a problem.  I've downloaded the x64 versions of MSXML 6.0, -SP1 and -SP2; installed all three (it takes about 2-3 seconds and the install dialog box says they were successfully installed), but when I try to install a component that requires MSXML 6.0, it says it isn't installed.

MSXML 6.0 and it's Service packs do not show up in Programs and Features.  I tried Microsoft Update to catch any security updates to it, but nothiong was noted.  I then tried manually installing an update and it said the product wasn't installed for it to update.

In my C:\Windows\System32 folder I find msxml6.dll and mscml6r.dll.  I assume these are for MSXML 6.0.

What am I doing wrong?  And how can I correct it?

  • Hi Mike,

You can try the steps in How do I repair or reinstall the MSXML 6.0 parser libraries? to check the result.

In addition, here is a thread for your reference:

MSXML 6.0 x64 fails to install on Windows 7 x64 rc

  • Thanks.  I tried SFC /ScanNow and it came up with no problems.  I then opened an elevated command prompt and ran regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and, while it successfully loaded, I wasn't ablew to install the app for the same reason.  I then tried to register the following DLL's:

    urlmon.dll, Shdocvw.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Mshtml.dll, & Browseui.dll .

The loaded OK, except for mshtml.dll and shdocvw.dll; got the following error (name of dll was matched each in the error):

  • Hi Mike,

Have you tried to install this app in other computer? What’s the result?

What’s the error message when you trying to install it on this computer? Also try to install it Clean Boot mode to check whether this is affected by third party tools.

  • I haven't tried this on another computer.  It's a PowerShell GUI I found on TechNet's Gallery I wanted to try to support the end-users.

    Here's the error:

I did a Clean Boot as you suggested and got the same result.
